What, no alternator rebuild kits at pelican?

I see no such thing. 450 bucks is a lot for a new one. I'd like to take the Early S man approach on this one but don't want to spend weeks mail ordering parts from arcane websites.

Just tell me there's no kit at Pelican.

You could go to a rebuild shop and buy new brushes and bushings but you need to check the armature and diodes to make sure they are okay, better to have it pro rebuilt for around $120 than to need to R/R it again

I have used them multiple times with no issues. No affiliation.

Kurt, look in the Yellow Pages under Alternators, there are a ton of places in LA that rebuild these every day for the local Porsche shops, etc.

Probably $100-$120.

They probably stopped the rebuilts due to the fact that 2 out of 3 of the ones they gave were no good. No fault of Pelican.

Okay, rebuilt alternator in. 101 projects covers this, and nicely as well.

I went ahead and ordered a rebuilt one from the website given above. 170 bucks or something and it came shiny and new with nuts and the works.

My old one was completely shot as the pics show and also as there is a whole lot of noise coming from back there that is not coming there now. It musta been whining and groaning like crazy.

While you may get everything you need for installation, one thing circled I didn't notice that I needed from the old one is a spacer.

Not until I got it all one that I realized as I pushed it by hand that it rubbed/got stuck. Not good. I was able to slip off the fan without taking everything off though, and fetch the spacer from the old one. Just a heads up.

Your old alt. has a burnt stator which probably got "cooked" by a overvoltaging
regulator. Make sure your new/rebuilt alt. has a OEM Paris-Rhone regulator.
Also, don't push the fan on the shaft as the rotor will slide in the front bearing
and either break the reg. brushes or the plastic rear bearing support. Once
the fan is in place, use the nut (tighten it) to slide the fan on.

I think if you request Pelican, they can order (if not stock) a good Paris-Rhone
reg.

Thanks Loren. It did come with the Pasris-Rhone regulator--at least I could see the name on the back of the new one. The new one came complete. I made sure with the exception of the spacer, that everything I could see on the old alternator was on the rebuilt one.

No chip in the BCR, none planned. Removed chip from 996 and copied
a stock one from the Ducati dealer and installed it. The 996 runs great
after tweaking F/I system. The 998 can be tweaked via a laptop or PDA.
My 996 has a variable resistor.

Chips suck! Hate them chips!

You can't get alternator parts anywhere.. Both 911 alternators I have need new slip rings but they are unobtainable. All you can buy is a regulator

It's not an easy DIY alt. repair when you need to go beyond a regulator
replacement. The slips need to pressed on and turned on a lath.
The only major 3.2 alt. problems are;

1. the regulator
2. the slip rings
3. the bearings

Regulator problems are the biggest. If I had more free time,
I'd put an external regulator on my 3.2.

The alt. used in the '82 & '83 911SC has the additional problem of blown
diode plates. This alt. (75 amp) is the worst alt. Porsche ever used.
