Do you flash?

I propose a New Year's Resolution to revive the art of flashing a fellow P-car owner when we pass on the roadway (with the headlights, that is). It seems like not many know about the time honored tradition. Any comments or suggestions on how we can get the tradition back?

In the heyday of the 356's, it was a reflex we didn't give a second thought to. I've been without a street legal car for a few years, so will have to get back into the habit now that I have one! That is, after I replace the non-flashing high beam switch!
It's a great custom, however.

I agree, it should be done again! If you are like me and live in a P-car defficient state, you will not be "wearing out the switch"...

I try, but I'm not always fast enough, and occasionally I'm so excited about the opportunity that I hit the wipers by mistake. One of the regulars from the Rennlist has made it his personal crusade. He's even devoted some of his website to it,

I always try to wave as flashing sometimes causes confusion from other motorists. And when you're in heavy traffic in So Cal (even on surface streets) confusion already runs rampant.

If I ever saw another Porsche in central Kansas, I wouldn't flash, as I'd probably be in the ditch from shock. Actually my neighbor's dentist son has a Boxster, but he doesn't strike me as the enthusiast type.

I usually wave, because I actually drive the NARP 944 on the street more than the 911. The 944 takes time to raise the headlight buckets, and it's too late. And the fog lights are now brake cooling ducts.

I definately flash when driving the 911.

Why can't we just wave, like most other car owners do? Corvette people wave. Land Rover people wave. Even Miata people, though they completely lack any sense of what an attractive car ought to look like, wave. Porsche people are too cool to wave, and have to confuse other drivers with the universal signal for "trouble ahead?" Sorry if my question offends, I'm a bit new at this whole "owning a Porker" routine.

with the 924, no chance at all , by the time them headlights popped up, the other guy is long gone... if i did manage to flash, the other guy would probably think i fell on my head as a child thinking i'll get a flash back in my 924...
then again, i did fall on my head many times throughout my childhood.. it was my signature move @ school

I usually do if I see the other car in time. Usually 964 and earlier respond. 993 and 928 maybe and 996, 944 never [yet].

2 quick honks and a wave is standard issue for me if I see anything air-cooled. I used to flash Boxsters, but most of the ones around here are driven by ugly middle-aged women indulging in their coffee while on the phone with fading Lieberman/Gore election 2000 bumper stickers. I've had a few 996 owners flash and I'll usually wave back if I catch it in time. The 993 owners almost always acknowledge with just a short wave and an all-business look on their face.

Amir: I know exactly what you mean - considering I live in the same neighborhood. However, I encounter 2 problems on a regular basis ...

1)Most new Porsche owners don't even realize that my 914 is a Porsche - even with the Fuchs 7X15s, sport exhaust

2)I'm usually going too fast for them to have time to acknowledge me ... or I them.

I used to go out of my way to signal other Porsche owners, but I got so few responses that I stopped signaling the water pumping sewing machines and now I reserve my acknowledgments for slow speeds and the owners of air cooled Porsches. Well-kept 914s usually get an entire conversation ... especially 6s.

I flash as much as i possibly can. Its a great tradition that should never die. However i have not been flashing to new boxters and 996's, seems as though MOST of these a$$ holes dont have any passion for p-cars, let alone have any idea why you might be flashing your lights at them. Believe me, Ive tried to break the ice on numerous occasions by flashing a 996, then in return recieving a disgrunted look of WTF is this poor guy in some "old" 911 doing flashing his lights. F it, maybe we should just flash them anyways and soon they might catch on. If not then we can just annoy them to death.

That's a very poor stereotype. It was the same case with your car when it was new too, the 996s haven't fallen into enthusiast's hands yet, they are just the hot new porsche on the block. Wait a few years and you'll see them flashing as well.
