Help Removing Flywheel Seal
So I've tried the method below to no avail. If I pry any harder the screwdriver will break. The seal is as hard as a rock. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Johnhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1073270778.jpg |
I used one of these. I call it a crow's foot, but I think it is listed in the Snap-on catalog as a close quarter prybar. Its about 6" long. It pulled my seal out on the first try and more importantly, it did not leave a mark on the end of the crank. Just make sure you do not insert it too far or it will scratch the seal surface on the case.
I know alot of people do not use the Snap-on trucks, but I'm sure you can find something similar to this at a tool supply store. Or maybe online? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1073271720.jpg |
Only thing I can think of is to apply a little heat with a small propane torch. I'm not speaking from experience but I can't think there is anything else you will damage by heating up the seal just to soften it up a bit. I just put my case together with a new seal. Anybody else have any ideas?

John - I just did this last week. The method you are trying didn't work for me either so I took a screwdriver and drove the tip (gently, with a rubber mallet) into the small opening at about 1:00. This pressure deformed the seal enough so that I could then pull it out.

just run in a course screw and put the slide hamor on it,,,,,if its real stuborn do it in a couple of places.

I see you already tried to crush the seal at the "open slot" on the right hand upper side. Take a hammer, a screw driver, and deform the seal some more at that slot (indent, or what you call it). When there is enough of an opening for a flat end of a screw driver or seal puller, stick it in, pry it out carefully, and it will come out.

This helped:
Sorry to revive an old thread here, but this really helped me with a stubborn flywheel seal.
The picture shows the tip of an extractor/slide hammer tool. I inserted a wood screw in the back end of the tip, screwed it in and then tightened the tip with a hose clamp. It did not work to secure the screw with the hose clamp alone, it needed more of a mechanical barrier. I think it also helped that I crushed the seal lip at the 1 o'clock position. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1519695340.jpg |

I bought a seal removal tool from HF, works really well.
nothing worse than scoring the side of the case. its just like the one JW posted in the link. |
