Jack Stands

I wanted to get a quick consensus on how you support your 911 when it is on jack stands without the suspension. With the suspension on, I like to place the front stands under the a-arms and the rear stands in the fender well on the torsion bar tube that sticks out. The problem is that I am going to need to remove all the suspension for upgrades and I am not sure how to support it without damaging the floorpan. Any ideas?

You can use blocks of wood and support it on the seams where the sheetmetal meets just ahead of rear suspension and just behind front suspension, same place where a (knowlegable) shop would lift it /w a hoist. Maybe someone can post a picture. Also, do you plan on removing the rear torsion bar tubes? Normally you could still support the rear w/ the tubes and do whatever you want, suspension-wise. Good luck.

Put long 2x4's or 2x6's under the leading and trailing edges of the floorpan (as close as possible to the bulkheads), put jackstands under those. The wood distributes the pressure. This is what I did when removing my suspension and no harm was done, I've also seen this recommended on this BBS.

For extra safety / weight distribution, you could also put more jackstands / wood pads under the engine and the very nose of the car (a 3' long 2x4 near the front mounts for the a-arms).

Edit: sorry, speeder beat me to it.

Edit: cool, my 911th post!

Some pictures in this one:

Are there reinforced jack plates under a 911?

I support my car on the "feet" things all winter. Even If you don't have the feet/pads there, it's still a strong location to put a jackstand.

Kevin,

You need to give up Porsches and wrenching. You make me sick......I mean, your garage is so clean, it makes me sick. (heh, heh, heh).

On a more serious note, I admire your organization.

Everything has it's designated place since my garage is kinda small. If something is not where it's supposed to be (because someone didn't put it back when she was done with it), the K-man gets a little aggravated.
