fair price to install carpet kit?

I bought a carpet kit from applied biz. I am not going to install it myself. What should I expect as a fair price for labor to install it?

I called one shop and got an estimate that sounded about 50% higher than I thought.

Take the time and install yourself. Provide beverages and invite a few Pelicanheads over and make a party of it! This will be cheaper, not take as long, and you will get the benefit of having done the job yourself. And if you note anything else to do while in there... :-)

David is right find a few friends and invite them over to help. It's not hard at all and can easly be done in half a day.

I'm trying to order the AppBiz carpet kit for just the rear so I can rip out the rear seats and just put in matting. I have a feeling ripping out the seats and cleaning out the gunk underneath will take a while.

Not sure how long it took RallyJon though...

A local upholstery shop had quoted me something like $300-$500. But I don't remember if that was the price *after* I removed the rear seats myself or with them doing it....

Either way, I remember hearing the price and deciding that I'd prolly try to do it myself first.

I know I should do it myself. ...sure are alot of pieces though. Between my 80 yr. old house, my 16 yr old Alberg 37 sailboat my 2 1/2 year old son and my 4month old son it is hard to find the time to do these things.

At that price, let them do it. Just ask to see the job before they reinstall the seats.

Also, tell us about the carpet kit you bought. How much was it? Is it Perlon, or domestic carpet? How long did the App Biz guys take to get it to you?

I don't remember the price ...170 or something. I called him and he gave me the internet/ebay price. It is not perlon but it is pretty lightweight stuff. I don't know that it is the quality of original german carpet but it will be a big improvement over what I have in there now. It is charcoal gray. I'll post pics at some point.

The app biz kits are really nice. I had a chance to compare it to a new german silver knit kit and you need to get pretty close to tell the difference.

Although there are time constraints involved, I agree with David. I would do it myself for the simple satisfaction it brings.

We refer many of our customers to a local trim shop here in S. Calif
they generally charge $150ish, but will often do it a little cheaper if you wave CASH at them. Make sure the shop you use has a pressure glue pot, this is a much better way to go than canned aerosol adhesive. You also need to make sure they have done several P-Cars in the past. If they don't have a glue pot, it is the WRONG place to have the work done.

BTW we had our felt manufacturer do a custom run for us of latex backed PERLON in the Factory (Dark Charcoal color), got the test samples last week and the rolls of material are on a rail car and should be at our production facitility by the end of the week. It looks like the have matched the factory PERLON exactly! Wayne and I have come to an agreement and we will be selling our products through Pelican. I installed the perlon kit from appbiz. Job took 30 hours in total.
That involved, gutting the interior, scrapping out all the sound tar, glue, insulation. Drilling out all the little brackets and tabs and what-not, since the rear seats and panels were not going back in. I used 3m Super Adhesive at the recommendation of my local interior shop. It probably took a bit longer, since I had to make up templates for the footwell area where the foot blowers were removed.

Took 10 cans of the glue. YES, ten. The backs of each piece was completely covered with adhesive, not just the edges.
Oh, this is not a winter job. Temps much be 60 degrees or higher and LOTS and LOTS of ventalation. ie, keep the car outside and all the doors open. The fumes will cause a killer headache that lasts for a long, long time.
