I have a 85 911 carerra targa
I have noticed that all the power options still work with the key out. Power windows, seats, etc. After a few days of not driving my battery is dead. Normally windows and seats should not operate without the key in acc. Is this correct? Is there anything that is consuming power. ![]() When I bought it the seller mentioned that the battery would die after a few days and attributed it to the radio, so he disconnected. I uninstalled all this stuff to make sure and it's the same Any ideas on what might be drawing constant power to kill the battery. Ohh and the battery is new and charging under alternator load. thanks,

I think there must be a relay that is stuck on. Try removing the relays one at a time. I guess the electrical part of the ign. key could also be bad. I know on newish cars the power accesery relay is supposed to stay energized untill the key is removed or a door is opened

I would think that with all those items still being power energized, without the key even in the ign. switch, that the ignition switch is probably bad. I would not think it would be relay related, too many seperate items, seats, windows, etc. it would be hard for me to believe that all of these different relays are stuck.

I heard from the dealer that some of the new cars had this problem.
Car dies in 2 days if central locking system is inactive - you didn't lock the car. He was not sure on the 85 models. Any ideas on this theory

I would check the trunk light switch. My switch was bad, sometimes.
It would sit for a day and the battery would be dead. Other times it would sit for 3 days and the battery would be fine. I pushed the button in and sometimes the light would go out sometimes it would dim other times it would stay on. I have a buddy with an 87 that had the same issue. We both just pulled the bulb. It's the old refrigerator light question. Someone suggested putting a video camera in the trunk.

the PW relay also powers the other accs you mentioned. All should stop working after you remove the key and open a door not just turn it off. (just for kicks, try opening and closing the right door to see if the power goes off) If it does skip to "clean door contacts" last para.
To check the ign. sw. turn it on then off and take the key out. Check for power on fuse #5 in fuse box1. There shouldn't be any with the key out. If there is then the ign. is probably bad. If no power on fuse 5 then check fuse #1 in box 3. If you have power and you probably will (be sure you have opened & closed a door before checking) go to the PW relay. On PW relay (behind the gas gauge, you have to pull the gauge unit out of the dash) check terminal 86 (should be red/blk) again it should have no power with key out and door open>close. Now check 87 (should be blk) it will likely have power but shouldn't. Now you know the PW relay is on when it shouldn't be but why? (chances are the relay will also be slightly warm to the touch) With a door open check for ground on terminal 85b of the PW relay, the wires should be brn/wht. There should be a ground with either door open (hint - do your interior lights work with the doors?) Ok, if you have a ground when the door(s) are opened then the relay is kaput. If not then pull the door switches and clean off the contacts and try again. hope this helps, Anthony

Sears has a clamp-on digital multimeter that reads DC current for $49.95 ... if/when you get tired of the guessing game!
