show me rear bumper pad removed on a 78-89

i would expect to find the bumper/body colored paint under the rear pads, am I on track with this assumption?

secondly may i see a picture of them removed? maybe a close up and then the whole rear end?

thanks in advance

It is body color. Someone on here posted a picture showing the bumper installed without the rear pads. I am doing likewise.

Picture below is a '75, not an SC, but you get the idea.

On my '88, there was body-colored paint underneath, but I'm not sure it would be usable, given the color change on the rest of the car from UV exposure.

My car:

A little bit of discussion here:

'86 Carrera Rear Bumper

I like Wil's recommendation (in the above topic) of a D-ring bracket when taking off the rubber strips. Would make the car look "track-prepped" and reduce the sight of the nuts and washers.

I like the d-ring idea too, but I worry about someone trying to tow the car with them. I think the studs would snap off.

I can see the car rolling off the flatbed truck now.

thanks kevin, even got the color right! was that a repaint?

my car is and was a garage queen so i would hope that a rub of compound and wax might make it right.

colin the ride is looking very nice. was the paint post engine work?

a couple more questions, can you get to the fasteners without removing much, ie bumper?

and last where will i sit when i pull off to have a smoke during long rides? i always thought the pads were for sittin.

You can get to the screws if you remove the rear valence. It's a little tight if you have a factory-style muffler, but it's still doable.

Legally you need rear license plate lights.... but I've never heard of anyone getting ticketed for it. Actually, I take that back... an friend of mine got a ticket because his license plate lights were broken in Campbell. I hear Campbell is run by nazi cops.

That's funny, the only thing that they are good for is sitting on. They're heavy, (in the worst imaginable place), and ugly, but they are absolutely perfect as a bench!

Just the bumper, valance, side pieces were repainted. That's why the plastic caps match so well- same exact paint. And the paint wasn't even color matched! Just mixed by the code. According to my paint guy, Sherwin Williams acutally calls Porsche's 027 Guards Red India Red. So I was a little concerned. Turned out pretty good considering. A little bit of orange peel but I don't care. Looks way better than it used to look.

The fasteners are only nylock nuts like the ones used on the valve covers. Should come off somewhat easily since your car is a "queen." Usually the problem that occurs is the bumper guard sticks to the bumper (due to the heat from the muffler) and will leave a thin layer of rubber than doesn't want to come off, or the paint will peel off. Both happened in my case. Only happens in small places. Nothing major. Although you might find slight corrosion underneath because those guards do a fine job of trapping water.

Thumbs down

Just a note -- in NC you will not pass the state vehicle inspection if you do not have the licence plates lights (how I actually found pelican parts the first time - trying to find a new one...). So.. mine remain on... they do make a nice bench.

Colin, couldn't you remove the studs from the shocks and then use carriage bolts?

Kevin, do you have a pic that shows the entire rear of the car?

thanks

Anthony,

I'm sure i've got another picture at home. What else did you need to see. I can take another picture if needed.

Also, I thought of carriage bolts too. Seemed that the inner bolt on each shock might be kinda hard to get at and tighten?

not a big deal I just wanted to get a look at the whole rear.

Yeah, good point. Been a while since I've had one off. Could you mount the shock to the bumper first then install on the car?

Here's one from the side.

A closeup of the plastic caps. Lookit that mirror finish. Picture perfect shot of the description "orange peel" if i've ever seen one.

I bet you could. It would be wise to have the side pieces and accordians off so you can attach the shocks more easily. Passenger side might be tough to do with the oil tank in the way? Have to take a look at it to be sure though.
