Anyone using SSI headers (not the heat exchangers)
I deleted the heat system from my car and I am looking for header options. I remember reading that SSI was going to make a run of headers. Is anyone using them? Was there a price difference between the heat exchangers and the headers? Is the tubing the same as on the hx?
I dont want to cut the heater boxes off of a functional set of SSIs and I cant find the headers for sale anywhere. Im looking at factory pre 74 heat exchangers as well, but I like the idea of using stainless. TIA Last edited by Shuie; 01-21-2004 at 07:32 AM.. |

So did you fix you problem with the car not running right? What was the cause?

different car. This one isnt running either
 My wrench still has the MFI car and I havent had a chance to get to his shop. 1st thing Im asking about is the points. |

I'm not using the SSI headers, but cut the rusty boxes off a set of early HEs to use simply as headers. They work great. I also saw a posting last week or so where someone did the same and had them Jet Hot coated. They looked sweet.
A couple others do custom headers for relatively cheap. I believe Steve Timmins welds up some from stainless and they go for somewhere around $600. There are some other souces, but I forget where.

Careful with cutting the heat exchangers off if they are not stainless steel. Some cheap exchangers used stainless steel of the exchangers, and mild steel for the headers (a recipe for disaster).
If you use mild steel headers, be aware that most pipes rust from the inside out, especially if you don't get the engine temperatures up enough during commuting to remove the condensation that forms INSIDE the pipes during the night. Rust forms and will find its way through the walls of the headers. That said, if you find a used set of stainless steel (SS) headers or complete heat exchangers, you'd be better off. SS will last forever.
