Removing Trunk Release for a Targa
Today, I decided I would like to get the lock for my trunk release rekeyed (I do not have the key for the lock) so I can lock my trunk when the Targa Top is off.
One small problem, I can feel the bolts holding the handle assembly in place to the bottom of the dashboard, but have no clue on how to actually remove them to allow the handle to drop and then allow me to separate the handle from the cable. Has anyone here BTDT? TIA ![]()

From what I recall, the "T" handle is held in by a set screw, which you can access under the dash. You also have to release the screw up at the front latch that clamps the release cable.

![]() Do you know what size allen wrench or whatever fits the set screw? To get in there I think I will need to grind it down to fit.

Once you get the lock off you can pop the cylinder out (retaining pin ) and file down the tumbler pins to fit your existing key.
Once out, put your existing key in the cylinder. Keep it in there to prevent the pins from falling out. File down the brass pins that stick up beyond the cylider. Put it back in the lock assembly and turn the key until it rotates the cylinder in the lock. i.e., locks and unlocks. Then put the whole thing back. Why carry around an extra key ? I think Wayne's 101 book tells you how. Did it with all my locks.

I just rekeyed my two door locks this morning. Remember to keep the key inserted when removing the lock. I didn't but I was lucky because there was so much crud in around the pins that they were stuck in place. After cleaning and grinding down the pins to fit the new key, the locks work Great. Good Luck.

Thanks for all of the advice. I still need to know the size of the set screw to make a tool I can get in there.

Still looking for a bit of advice on the wrench size/type needed to loosen the set screw.

If anyone has BTDT, a few tips on how to remove the handle assembly from the dash would be appreciated.

Open the trunk and go to where it actually latches in the front. The cable from the pull is held in with a small screw that you schould be able to easily loosen enough to where the cable moves freely of the latch. Be sure not to close your trunk after you do this though. Now go back to the T handle and pull it out as far as it will go. If my memory serves me correct, there should be a small allen screw on the right side of the black handle that fits flush with the edge. Use a small allen to remove the screw. Then put your key into the lock and wiggle it free. That should do it.

Kevin,
So, the set screw I need to remove in NOT the one I circled but actually recessed in the pull handle itself!

I took a look at the sketch in PET and did not see the setscrew you refer to. Is it the one I show or one that is hidden inside the housing? Call me anal, but I like to know what I am doing before I start. Thanks

It is not the one that is pointed to in your photo. It is on the right side of the handle itself (the part that pulls out), you have to release the cable in the trunk, otherwise the handle doesn't pull out far enough to access the screw.

Very belated update. Yes, you pull the handle out to reveal a very tiny set screw, loosen the set screw and extract lock.

I must thank you all for helping me with the details of how to extract the lock and sort it. I now have a locking bonnet (trunk).
Cheers, David |

Key adaptation for trunk release handle 914-511-907-00 911 Targa
The Porsche trunk release handle is fitted under the dashboard by 2 Allen screws.
![]() You first have to disconnect the cable in the trunk lock in order to pull it towards you. Once removed you can disconnect the cable from the handle by rotating the handle. ![]() The lock assembly can be freed by removing screw (1). The lock itself is held by a tiny screw (2). ![]() The lock consist of a cylinder with copper plates at both sides supported by springs. ![]() You can adapt them to your ignition key by rearranging them according to your key. Insert the plates and then insert your key. Every or most of the plates do have lower or higher slots. Placement (upper or lower) and position depend on your key profile. Try to match every plate in each slot so that when the key is inserted the upper side is aligned and levelled with the cilinder. The excess of material can be removed mechanically. ![]() Last edited by WMontald; 04-15-2021 at 01:49 PM.. |

Can't remember the last time I used that lock. With my longhood conversion, I don't think anyone can the damn thing open even after the cable is released...
Good luck.

I know this is an old thread, but how do you access the bolts to detach the handle assembly? Are they visible with the hood open?
My handle has broken and I can’t figure out how to access the two bolts to detach it |
