Pictures of my car and a ?

Hello,

I had a few minutes today, and decided to take some pictures of my car. Its a 1983 SC. I bought the car last September. I bought it without an engine and transmission installed. I bought the engine and transmission from the same person I bought the car from. The engine is a 1976 2.7 engine. The engine has the upgrades that you would expect it to have. Tentioners,11blade and pop off. The engine runs great. I know its not a 3.0, but it runs strong. I have bought several parts from folks on Pelican, and I appreciate the help. Also, this sight has been a lot of help over the past few months, and I want to say thanks to those who answered my technical questions. This car had California title when I got it. The car has been well taken care of. There is absolutely no rust on this car anywhere. The paint is faded on the hood and top of the front fenders. The interior is in good shape small rip in passengers seat. The question I really want to ask is; Do I have too much money in this car? Here is the catch, it has a rebuilt title. I know what most people feel about the rebuilt title, and it bothers me. I want to know if this car is worth spending the money for paint, or should I just enjoy it like it is. By the way, its fun to drive. No rattles and tight front end. I cant believe how tight is because the car is 21 years old. I will add a list of how much money I have in the car right now. Should I spend the money for paint with the rebuilt title? Im convinced the car was not in an accident. I have been all over this car with a fine tooth comb, and found nothing that would lead me to believe that it was ever wrecked. By the way Im a DIY fellow, so there is no labor charges listed.

Purchase of car = $3,000
Engine and Transmission =$1,500
Powder coating tin = Free
Powder coating fan = Free
Used CIS system = $175.00 I needed some parts.
Interior parts = $75.00
Half Shafts = $75.00 Used of coarse.
CD Player = $150.00
Fuel Pressure gages = $100.00
Licenses and registration = $375.00

Total at this point = $5,450

If you bought it for fun and not as an investment, paint it. You'll love the car that much more with a fresh coat of paint, then drive it until it dies. With a rebuilt title you won't ever get much for it anyway, and anybody who buys a Porsche to drive as an investment is kidding themselves.

You're kidding right?

For $5.4k you have the car and it drives and works fine? Even with rebuilt title, that seems to be a deal.

Does the engine need rebuilding anytime soon?

If not, I say do the prep work and take the car to get painted at Maaco.

Hi Randy! NICE WORK!

Rebuilt or not..if you enjoy the car..do what you want. Most 911's receive some owner touches anyway. If the chassis is straight and tight it should be a fine car. I have a good title on my car, but with all my work on it it might as well have started out as a stripped tub and no one would know the difference.

Just enjoy the car Randy...it's your first one...you've got a better car than I got and mine cost a lot more when I bought it.

Now drive that sucker to Illinois and should us what you got.

Yes the car is dependable, and drives great. I think the engine will last for a long time. I haven't done a leak down, but it makes a lot of power.

Souk
I have put about 1500 miles on it, and have enjoyed each one. Thanks for all the help with the CIS, I think I know the system better than the back of my hand now.

Yes, 1500 miles on the engine.. I drove it to work all last week. I had to adjust the WUR, but now its just right. I keep it in the heated garage at night, but it sat outside during work all last week. The temperature was around 10-20 degrees. The car starts right up and pulls fine no mater what the engine temperature is. There is only one thing I need to do, and that's replace the front tires. There not tread bear or anything, just old and dry. I need to fine one 6"x16" Fuch. For some reason it has one 6" and one & 7" up front. When I find a 6" to replace the 7" I will get new tread. I lost interest in it for a few weeks, probably due to the cold, so Im back searching for the couple of parts that I need. I plan to drive it regularly. Your old engine is now officially back in service...

I don't think you have too much $ in that car Randy. $5400 for that car is a steal in my opinion. Glad to hear you've got it mostly sorted out and you are also very pleased with it. That's what's important. You'd be shocked to know moneywise what some people have into their cars. Multiply your cost by around 5-1/2 to reach mine.

Hey Souk,

You'll be pained to know that Randy's motor (formerly yours) is being cooled by a fan that is using a pulley from a........................

Carrera

Worse yet, that pulley is from my Carrera. Mwuhahahahahahahaha!!!! The influence of my car on Souk's psyche is irresistible

At the core of that car beats a Bastard's heart...no amount of Carrera jewelery can take away from it...even if it is enchanted with Unicorn parts...

sorry Kevin..you'll have to try harder buddy...

Unfortunately Kevin is right Randy. You got that car up and running for such little cost that anything you do will still put you ahead of the game..shoot some guys have more into their wheels and tires than you do that car..enjoy it!

Be it a Bastard heart, it's being sustained with my Carrera pulley. Like it or not, the fact remains that the heart is allowed to beat via that Unicorn Carrera pulley cooling it. I even gave him some shims! Admit it. Stings a little, doesn't it?

Randy,

I'd kill to be able have a 911 that cheaply. I did it all wrong with mine. Maybe i'll sell mine and start all over again.

Please don't Maaco! Would you trust Burt Renyolds (sp?) to paint your car? Find a good shop to have it done, really, your hardly into it by most people's standards. Get the new tires, it's amazing the difference they made on my car. That is, until it broke three days later.....

PAINT IT! With a car that beautiful and sorted out, you won't have to worry about getting your money back if you keep it the same color and find a reasonable price. Ask everyone you know about painters and those who work out of their garage on quality European cars. I just found one who charges $25/hour (under the table) - any IRS agents out there? and I have seen his work on 5 P-cars cars and it is show quality - he only uses the best materials and is a fanatic. They seem to exist in every town I've lived in. You just need to start asking people you trust.

Looks like the vote is unanimous. Im happy to here the opinions of all of those on Pelican. I must say that Im surprised at the replies. I have read a few post on rebuild titles, and they suggested that no one should even stand next to a car with one. There really isn't any body work to be done before paint. There is one small (hardly noticeable) ding in the deck lid. I will start the hunt for a decent painter at a reasonable rate. Thanks for all the input, its appreciated.

Souk, KLT
The bastards hart don't miss a beat. The pulley and the engine, its like a marriage made in heaven. Heck, it should be in the tabloids. After all there done with the JEN and BEN romance now. Thanks for the help from both of you.

Oh yeah, paint that puppy. When you've got a good solid base, it also gives you the opportunity to do few creative things; witness my before and after shots.

Randy, paint it and enjoy it....it's so much more fun when you are satisfied with it completely (performance and paint!). Where in Indiana are you? I'm up in South Bend and can point you to a great place for paint work...they just finished my SC and are currently working on my 914.
