R/P question
Is the R/P in the tranny a high wear item? When looking at a used one, how can I tell if it is worn while still in the tranny?
Thanks, Jeff

Jeff,
I assume you are talking about a 915 for an SC. No, the ring and pinion gears are not a high wear parts. That is not to say they can’t experience a failure from lack of oil, extreme old age, or huge amounts of torque and horsepower (700 HP SB Chevy range.) Gear synchronizing is the main issue since they are designed to wear and some ham-fisted PO can abuse them. If you are buying one that isn’t running in a car, I would make a deal with the seller and have it sent to an independent knowledgeable person/shop for partial disassembly and evaluation. Even after that there is still some risk. Best, Grady
