My take on Dunkels's......

Got there the night before....bit of trauma, Blondie the 2.7 powered 914 was doing 75 mph in the fast lane of the 5 freeway....right in the middle of the 'hood. All of a sudden, the engine did a fast decel.....no spark. Everything else was working.

Managed to get over four lanes without killing me or the car.....got to the breakdown lane and after about ten minutes of fumbling, found the yellow spade connector on the solenoid had fallen off. It seems that lead supplies power to both the sparking power and starter....woof, got on the road.

Met another lister for dinner and saw a few others that I had not seen since last Dunk's.....

Next morning....what a clusterwhump/////

The 356 board asked for volunteers and would get us in for hel;ping out prior to the mad rush between 6:30 and 8:00. So....like a good little lemming, I fire up Blondie and head over next door. They wouldn't let ya park over the night before like in past years BTW.....

Get to the entrance....no way...can't come in, gotta park in line next door next to the BofA.....rather burn one down than be next to one...another story.....

Anyhow, I'm second in line....then the rush gets on.....the proctors, send "most" of the early entrants to the staging areas....then all off a sudden the angry buzz of dinky four bangers are heard......

THE 912 CLUB HAS ARRIVED.....WEeeeeeeEEEEELLLLL ain't that SPECIAL.....seems they get as a "pre registered group".......wowowwwowoowo, there were some pi$$ed off campers waiting in line for next hour....

Anyhow......I blew off my volunteer thingy as they did not honor their commitment to the volunteers and just sat on my butt and sold some stuff and bought some stuff....actually came home with more money in my pocket than I had when I arrived.

Even Blondie got out of the sun with some shade.....

I don't thimk the next Dunk's will be worth attending....if there is another one. I spoke with Mrs. Dunkel and she confirmed that they are downsizing and moving.

It's gotten pretty big, that's for sure. but in spite of being in one of the lines for a half hour, I had a fantastic time, met fantastic people including you and sold about half of what I spent.

Pomona is much worse. Also, that is the end of my selling career as well as I didn't get to spend a s much time as I would have liked in the front with the cars. It's not worth the time. I threw half my stuff away on the way home at the local unattended dumpster. Not to worry, boys, it was only steel banana arms, Targa rear glass, gas tank and some marginal interior that got tossed.

Edit: Mike wasn't the only bloke with rabbit ears. There is a small society. I don't know what it takes to join and I probably don't want to know. But, they are mulitilying like.........rabbits.

Ryan, that has happened to me in the past. People don't wear name tags, I guess they think it's uncool or you just have to hang around and meet these folks one by one at many events running. It's not a real 'open' society. But everyone was there, I mean everyone. Alois Ruf again, too. I didn't see many back in the swap area where I had to stay most of the day. A lot of these guys can't be bothered with a bunch of junk and I can't blame them. Folks, do your shopping here on the parts4sale boards all year long. Like he said, the Dunkels/Ventura/Pomona stuff is the same ol', same ol'.

I was lazy, rolled in around 8:30 and was the second to last 911 they let in to park on the grass, but I didn’t have to wait in a line. I even got to park right next to Blondie. I missed most of you there, where were you guys?

I spent the morning hanging out w/ Bob (bob’s flat six), MikeZ, & Sam, met Phillip (grindinggears), and said high to DaveB, Chuck Moreland, Curtis, Sherwood, and Glen.

There were so many beautiful cars to check out. The swap meet was ok, saw lots of stuff that was at Ventura, I guess you need to get good at picking out the new stuff. I bought a new set of sun visors from Bob (appbiz), and Bob (BobsFlatSix) gave me one of his 3 for $5 “Genuine Porsche Parts” stickers, thanks Bob!

It was a good show but a lot like Ventura, I think I enjoy Ventura more but Dunkle’s is much closer for me. All in all it was a great way to spend the morning.

This sounds like what the Kelley Park VW show is going thru. It's become way too big for it's venue, so people have to get in line @ 3:00am (yes, 3:00am) if they hope to have a snowball's chance in hell of getting in. This has caused some friction with the SJPD, who don't like the idea of a huge line of cars with hundreds of kids milling about. The last time I went - 2 years ago - I arrived ~5:45am to find the line to get in was literally a mile long.

NorCal needs a Pomona-esque swap meet.

I was pukin' all night (usual stuff for me. I have Crohns Disease) so I didn't get there until 9:30. I had to park in the BofA lot, but Ian (Ian) saw a spot and asked one of the guys at the front it they'd let me in. So I got a spot right up front (about 10 spots away from Blondie). Cool show, with lot's of awesome cars. I hope they continue. I met Phillip, again. Saw JMPro and talked with Al Reed for a few minutes. Good times~! Ohh, and for you back East guys, I kinda got a little sun burned!

I didn't buy anything, but there were some SSI's that were calling my name. "Chad.... Chad... buy me"

Hey Mike, it pays to be organized BTW, why don't 914 owners come as a group?

Maybe, maybe not. We all got a kick out of "Frankensteen" in Solvang. Besides, they tolerate me!

well the weather was spectacular, but the pickins at the swapmeet seem to be getting worse, but just getting to see everyone and all the cars makes it worth it.

Having recently met Mrs. Ruf, I'd much rather have a photo with her. Total MILF!!!

We enjoyed it. As with most volunteered events, there are glitches, but they were minor compared to other events. Much better than any Pomona event, as it is focused on one theme: PORSCHE. If they do something like this at another location, we're there. Too many nice cars and people. We don't sell much typically, but the after sales in the weeks to come help make our efforts worthwhile. Still can't drive one of the toys and parts haulers at the same time. so no showing off

You have to bring the donuts.

You just wait until the GAF at Ventura runs out of other models and uses the 914 as the feature. They'll be everywhere. Did you ever think that there were that many Speedsters? (2002)

Then our little mid engine leaf blowers won't have to bring the donuts and they'll even save a space for us.

Yuck, me too.
Been living with it for bout 30 years. Had a bottom end rebuild ....split the cases, but no leaks afterwards.....at 40 and again at 50.
Good luck to you.

Yeah, but in the other (main) thread: Dunkel's 2004 Pictures

I am sorry that I missed so many of you guys, I got there around noon. I guess that everyone else goes at 8 o'clock A.M.(?) I only wake up early for substantial amounts of $$ or to go to the track.

I did my share for the parts economy by buying something that I have absolutely no use for, a perfect '86 dash top from Dave B. for a future project car TBA.

This was the first time for me; drove down from SJ and stayed next door at the Ramada. Took a lot of pics of the some of the more exotic P-cars like the 904/550's. I've been looking for a nice 914 for a few months and ended up buying a very nice '76 914 2.0 liter! Definitely worth the trip! Even found a nice OE steering wheel at a good price as I lost my original when I put on the 930S wheel. I'll be baahhck!
