Slightly OT... NFS server???

Ok, I'm addicted to Need For Speed (Porsche Unleashed). Probably due to the fact that it is cold as snot outside.

So, any of you PC gamers know of a server or other way for a bunch of us to get together and do some virtual racing???

Tell me that wouldn't be fun.

Only problem is... I don't know where to start.

Ideas???

Is it really that cold there? Man, that must suck(not being sarcastic). Can't you select a warmer assignment next time? Are you still serving?

That would be cool. I think EA used to host games, but now they only offer the NFS Underground Ricing version .

Leland, pick up Project Gotham Racing 2. Lots of Porsches there, including a 73 RS. Racing on Live is a snap.

I'm all for this! One of us just needs to host it. I'll try to figure out a way w/ a random IP address that you get everytime you log onto AOL. It might be a, "ok here it is" thing everytime we want to play.

BTW- If any of you XP guys are having problems, I know the fix.

So, there aren't any servers out there?

Well, I think it would be a hoot for us to all get together and race. Unfortunately, I have never played a game online so know very little about it.

If we can come up with a way to make it work, it would rock though...

I have been addicted to NFS PU for years now, even before I got my 911. However I too have never been successful at playing online. I'm up for some online racing. I got the 935 sitting in my garage, in the game that is. This is the best racing game by far.

I think this will work but we need to get together at the same time.

Let's shoot for tomorrow at 7PM PST. I'll post the IP five min prior on this thread, where ever the moderators decide to stick it.

Tomorrow indeed... 8pm MST.

So, I just have to cut and paste that i.p. address in my browser?

Ryan, I'm pretty lame at this... how exactly do I get on?
Do I open the address in my browser, then start the game? Or do I have to start the game, then somehow get to the i.p addy from within the game?

Connect to the net like you normally would, then start the game.

Select Driver
Select Multiplayer
Select Peer to peer
Then type in the IP address that I post 5min prior, it might be the same one, might not.
Then select Connect at the top of the screen
I should see you when you come up, then we can talk Chat style right in the game.
Make sure you have V3.5, you can get it w/ a search of the net or I can email it to you.
If you guys have downloaded the RS, we'll race that, again you can download it or I can email it.

I hope it works, see you tomorrow!

Daytime BUMP for anyone else interested in participating in the 1st Annual Pelican Parts Virtual Champion Cup. Tonight at 7 pm PST.

Ryan, I have a cable modem so I'm always online.

So, Do I still need to open internet explorer before starting the game?

I remember seeing multiplayer options but if I remember right, it wanted a user registration and or password. I was not able to register online anywhere.

When I get off work, I'll give it a try just to see if it'll work.

Make sure you update to v3.5 here- EDIT: email me for the update.

My AOL highspeed DSL is weird, I have to log in before I'm connected, and if you're always connected then you're fine.

I think you only need to register at a site for web play, for peer to peer you will be connecting directly to me.

I’m thinking ’73 911RS, Monty Carlo Circuit 3, 2 laps for starters. I think we can only have 8 persons at a time so first come first serve after I post the IP. It’ll be a friendly game so keep the game cheats out.

It better work!

My NFS PU was just bought three days ago at Walmart... so I'm hoping it is the current version.

I downloaded the patch just in case.

So, do we chose the cars before we get onto the server or after we've all got online together?

I'm at home for lunch so I'm going to try it to make sure the game works ok with the new patch.

You will still need v3.5, even if you just bought it.

You select your car after you connect to the host (me), or I might select it for you, we’ll see. I can’t seem to find the RS patch, I don’t remember if the RS came from the 3.5 patch or if I downloaded it. If we don’t all have it we’ll start w/ the ’72 S, one of my NFS5 favorites.

NFS5 tip: If you want to play w/ all the tracks, you can select multiplayer, peer to peer, create, then just select the track, car, and hit Race. You’ll be playing by yourself but there are some fun tracks in there.

BTW, I’ve only had this game for about a month. I’ve never been into gaming but this game is just so cool, must be the cars. Makes me feel like a big kid too.

OK, just so I don't screw up... I downloaded v3.5 and it saved to my desktop. I unpacked it and it did it's thing...
is this ....ok? I mean... did it do it's thing? I can't, for the life of me, find a NFS version anywhere. I've looked in the properties and still can't find where it says which version I'm running... just to confirm the patch loaded and all.

Other than that... I can't wait.
I'll probably get smoked by you guys but... well, you DO have a 3.6 advantage, don't you, Ryan?

LOL, If only I could figure out how to write my own car into there, that would be way cool.

To check the Version: Open the NFS PU folder, right click on Porsche.exe, and click properties. The v3.5 is a little over 1mb, the old version is ???kb, so if it's over a MB it's good to go.

There are car editors out in the NFS fan websites with loads of cars to download, and the files to download to unlock all the cars with the game.

I used to host NFSPU races when I was on Rennlist a few years back, and used to have solo runs where I would list the car, the track, and the game settings, then everyone would email their best time with a screen shot of the final time.

The best races always were when everyone had the same stock car, the 914's were great, the 2.7rs wasn't bad, but a bit squirly. Great fun to have 6-8 guys running at once.

I'll see if I can join in tonight, if I can get my steering wheel to work with xp. Is that 10pm est?

I did not like driving the RS. Like John said.. it was hella-squirley. My favorite so far is the 993 twin turbo. It's just easier to drive.

But whatever we use will be cool.

it sounds like we need more than one person to host a game.

I won't be able to be on tonight, but I'm definitely up for it some other night!

I don't have this game yet but I play battlefield 1942 online.

With it all you need is the game and to download the latest patch. You then launch the game while online. Click on multiplayer and it gives you a selection of servers that run the game. You choose one thats not full and it's game-on.

Does NFS not have anything like this? They are both EA games.

They did, but took it down over a year ago. NFSPU is a pretty old game.

You need to play the evolution mode, where you can buy your own cars, and then set them up. Ride height, toe, tire pressure plus better parts makes the RS awesome.

I'll try and join up.

Cool. what servers do you play on. I mostly stick with the EA ones for BF and go with wherever I can get on with DC.

I have found a server where you can play Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 online. I'm guessing that's the newest version?

It's

John find the gimme.dll file in the PU folder and rename it to anything, I renamed it test_gimme.dll. I'm not sure if this will take care of your DirectX problem. Make sure you have the lastest version of DirectX.

The IP will be 169.254.250.241

It makes a huge difference setting the cars up right. The physics models are loose though & adjustments don't always have the effects you would expect. I remember there are a few tips & tricks that can shave tens of seconds off lap times

I'm gonna be stuck at work

NFS HP2 is yucky, all of the cars handle as if every part of the car is suspended on long springs. There is a delay to all of your inputs, and the handling is horrible. They do seem to tend to oversteer which is fun I guess, but I have tried to like that game and can't. From what I understand it was done by different people than NFSPU, so that explains the problems.

I'm available if anyone else is. Try 208.191.146.111, I'll see if I can get a thing going.
