Redundant POS VDO clock died....

So...what's out there to replace it with? I have a wrist watch and a clock in my radio.....I have oil temp and pressure....besides putting a big red idjut light there for oil...what else can go in the hole?

jhelgesen 02-04-2004 06:22 AM

You can put a fresh air vent in there, gives a great blast of air on a hot day.

Joe Bob 02-04-2004 07:09 AM

It's a cabriolet.....I gets ALL the fresh air I needs.....

yelcab1 02-04-2004 07:15 AM

1. Water temp gage? Oops never mind, it's a air blower.
2. How about a battery 12V voltage thingy. That is useful.

1980SC 02-04-2004 07:20 AM

I replaced my redundant POS VDO clock with a CHT gauge.

Just plug it! I added a little Pelican sticker for good measure...

Mikey, fix the clock, there are tech articles on doing it.

k9handler 02-04-2004 07:55 AM

just remove all the workings from the clock, cut a plain ol black face and insert it in the bezel...now you have a clock delete.

campbellcj 02-04-2004 08:35 AM

The tech articles are for the early (electrically wound mechanical) clocks I think. Mikey's is probably the modern quartz type.

You can probably find a replacement used from the usual suspects. Years ago I got one at Pomona for $20...

thrown_hammer 02-04-2004 08:41 AM

Chuck,
There must be some kind of mistake. Must be the glare...I cleaned up the pic a little and it is defenitely glare. ;)

Voltmeter.

The clock in my '86 is still going strong. I wonder how many 1980's non-VDO car clocks are still going these days?
Now the digital one in my 944, that's a POS.

A mirror so you can check yourself out... it is Southern California, right.....

Groesbeck Hurricane 02-04-2004 09:15 AM

You had a working clock??? I'm jealous!

Delete clock for weight savings. Should equal at least two horsepower!

JeremyD 02-04-2004 09:17 AM

Mine in my 87 keeps great time, better than the rolex.......

Sonic dB 02-04-2004 09:21 AM

Leave it alone as a reminder that
"Time Stands Still when I am driving my 911"

thats what I did with my POS clock...

:p

Schrup 02-04-2004 09:23 AM

How much does it wiegh? Mine still works.

A boost gage! Why bother with anything less. This also means upgrading to a motor that has boost. :p

Langers 02-04-2004 07:44 PM

CHT gauge or tranny temp gauge...

Joe Bob 02-04-2004 07:45 PM

Hmmm, good suggestions....wonder if they make a combo CHT. volt meter and ERAM monitor.....

Langers 02-04-2004 07:46 PM

Or a g-force meter ;)

red-beard 02-04-2004 08:22 PM

How about a "blow tube" hooked up to the engine. It would be at least as effective as the E-RAM

poorsha 02-04-2004 09:35 PM

Plasma screen ?

Bob Goding 02-05-2004 01:15 AM

I had been pondering this problem for some time , and a few months back I saw an article in that English magazine [cant remember the name] which featured a RS Replica with a Russian
Aircraft clock installed in that spot. Those clocks are magnificent--
8-day wind up, standard fitting in all Soviet aeroplanes.
They sell on E-bay and I intend to get one if they dont run out.
Somebody might be able to scan the pic and post it.
Bob

sammyg2 02-05-2004 01:16 AM

If the boost gauge I just ordered fits in the hole I might be willin to part with my clock, it still wurks ;)

OZCarrera3 02-05-2004 03:03 AM

Don't know about over there, but I replaced the mechanism inside mine with a brand new item for about $AUD80 (say $USD60). The same mechanism is used in most family (GM and Ford) cars here. Mind you I was quoted over $500 ($USD380) by my local Porsche Dealer for an original replacement item.

Larry Harris 02-05-2004 04:39 AM

Bob Goding,
Keep me posted on the clock. I might be interested, although I probably would make a clock for my den.

My clock would only run when the engine was running. Made a great hour meter. Had it out several times trying to find out why it did this, everything had power, but it would only run with the engine running. Knew exactly to the min how many hours were put on engine each time it was started, set it at 12 then start, when I shut it down, all I had to do was look at the time and see how long I had it running. Got old after a while, I put a good used one in.

Silveresrty911S 02-05-2004 05:03 AM

How 'bout a Nav. unit

Wonder if you could take an old fuel / oil temp gauge, re-work it for cht/ alt. Might be worth a call to North Holywood Spedo.

Bob Goding 02-05-2004 04:30 PM

Heres a sample of the russian clock--they reckon about 3" dia.
This one is new but its a bit too pricy I think. Plenty of others tho.

JeremyD 02-05-2004 04:35 PM

Mike you may not be able to break this one...

These clocks have been designed to withstand speeds of Mach 3 / 1800 mph (2900 km/h) and altitudes of up to 100,000 feet (30 km). These robust timepieces are built to keep time flawlessly while pulling 6G’s!

pwd72s 02-05-2004 04:47 PM

In all seriousness, for a street car? Especially one in which you don't care about originality? Voltmeter. Hands down the most useful gauge, and a gauge I feel Porsche should have put in as standard equipment.

Typical Fish 02-05-2004 04:50 PM

Do you even have to ask???

I got a 1980 911 my clock is kinda still going. The second had died but the clock still works. :D

pwd72s 02-05-2004 05:37 PM

WTF? They came with a second hand??? My original clock died in the 70's. I replaced it with a newer Quartz clock of the same style. So far, nobody has commented on why it says "quartz" at the bottom of it's face...

wilke3169 02-05-2004 05:51 PM

My 81 sc doesnt have a second hand but has a hand u can set as a timer. Keeps perfect time. Also have a voltmeter which is very useful. It showed no alternator long before the light did.
