We are having to replace the alternator on a 79 911 targa carrera and while shopping around we located a 95 amp alternator. Currently it has a 70 amp alternator. Can anyone tell me the benefits of increasing the amps? Also is there any drawbacks to putting in the additional amps? Any information on replacing the alternator would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. |

If you increase the electrical load, e.g. you have more consumers of power (wattage) in the car, such as a big stereo, uprated lights, etc., you may want the additional power. Since the voltage doesn't change (14v) you go from 70 amps (980 watts) to 95 amps (1330) watts.
But be forewarned, this probably entails conversion from an external voltage regulator to an internal regulator, which, while not that complicated, puts the regulator right next to the hot engine block. Heat is the enemy of electrical components, and sometimes this causes trouble (e.g. no charge when hot). The uprated alternator is also heavier, and you might need a different fan shroud housing, which is not cheap. Unless you are running quad rally lights up front I'd stay stick with stock.

I would strongly suggest getting your alternator re-built. You'll know it's the right model and will fit correctly, it will be much cheaper than buying another alternator and a properly re-built unit will last as well as a new one. Check with local mechanics to see who they use for rebuilding alternators and starter moters.

95 amp alternator won't fit in the housing for a 70 amp alternator. At least the one I bought won't. Anyone need a 95 amp alternator?

Thank you for the information. I don't think we will be needing one.
