Ducktails are cool
I installed my new ducktail earlier this week and amazed at the drop in engine temperature. I remember people saying the tail would cool the engine with the added airflow but I was not expecting this much of a change. My engine temp runs very consistent and after the installation has run consistently cooler by 10-15 degrees (my estimate looking at the gauge). The pic below shows the before and after temp on a normal day.
![]() Has there been any firm data documenting the addition of a tail and the corresponding temperature cooling? Probably not, too many variables. All I know is that after adding the ducktail, I’m much cooler times 2! V/r Wayne C. 83 SC Coming soon…pictures of the Ruby Red Duck! |

My C2 tail lowers my temps when it's up by 10F. Enjoy it, and lets see that duck!

I have a front mounted oil cooler on my '74 911, would the ducktail still provide further cooling with the oil cooler present?

Yes, the tail will provide cooling air to the fan, which cools the cylinders, what really matters. It also improves cooling air to the engine mounted cooler.

A new one for $395 would be an OK deal, as long as it was a good quality one. I've seen new ones go for under $300 (Tweeks, Performance Products) but having never seen the actual product, I can't comment on the quality.
Now, if that used ducktail was an original metal/fiberglass one, $395 would be a deal! ![]()

Not so fast Mr Static---it may be if the ducktail matches the color of his car and is simply a bolt on. Cliff--need more details on that used ducktail--condition? manufacturer? painted or not? is it already fitted?

The temp drops of about 10 degF is documented somewhere...either Randy Leffingwells (sp?) book or Frere or Ludvigsen...
But I distinctly recall the point made... and it being about 10 degF .... ---Wil Ferch

Had the same experience of lowered temps on my SC when I was running a duck-tail. I think it causes enough turbulance to allow the air flowing over the decklid to be sucked in more efficiently. All this and good looks too.

I paid $285 new for mine. So, no, $395 should buy you at least three used ones.

Be very careful when purchasing ductails, I bought several for my '72 before I found one that fit right. Heat also changes their fit.
