Porsche Crest Would you trade a 75 911S for a 73 911T?

Here we go again. It seems that my 911S is the envy of all my friends (see my old thread: "Would you trade a 911 for both a 944S and 924S?") and I have received another offer on it. This time, it's in the form of a very clean 73 911T. The car has 80,000 miles on it, a decent respray in the original pale yellow and a clean brown vinyl with houndstooth cloth inserts interior. It's an air car but it doesn't currently work but the mechanical injection works perfectly. It's been sitting for a while but fired up on the first turn of the key... my 75 won't even do that! 15x6 Fuchs wheels, no oil leaks and a whopping 125hp round out the deal. Seeing that I kept up to a WRX this afternoon in an impromptu acceleration contest on the highway, I know my modified 2.7 is putting out the reputed 220 dynoed horsepower... or more. I'd miss the power, yes, but the earlier 911s are so pretty. Yeah, yeah, I know I've already got one but it's a 912 so it doesn't count. So... what to do. The 911S is currently my daily driver but I don't think that I could do that to the 911T... they're just so fragile looking. I'd feel guilty. That would mean I'd need a beater... a VW Fox wagon perhaps. That'd be almost free I'd think.

Why does life have to be so complicated???

It's a matter of taste and weight. You can eventually drop a nice 2.7 RS into the T or a 3.6 and really amaze those all Subaru brats. Or, you keep your nice ride and take care of the starting problem and take the money you would save on the T to make your present car even better.

You're one ahead of me, so don't complain. Fragile looking? I drive mine daily, even in the winter (gasp) . Of course, it is has been broken about half the time I've owned it, I consider that working out the kinks. That's way tougher than the 924 thing, but still, I'd personally keep the '75S if I already had a longhood. C'mon, the only thing different is the name. I like the silver, but a modded 2.7 would seal the deal for me. You seem in a hurry to get rid of that beautiful silver S, want an Aubergine 70 T?

That is a pretty car. But why are you dumping on your 912? If I had a nice 912 and a nice mid year 911 that was realiable and quick, I wouldn't budge. If I could only have one, then I'd take the '73.

I had a '72T and its power was underwhelming and frustrating. Once you know horsepower you can't go backwards and be happy unless you simply want a car to cruise around and not try to blow off others. A T is a completly different mindset. It's about not being in a hurry. Compared to a 912, it's a rocket ship, but compared to your current ride it will be disappointing, unless you have a good bankroll.

Nicest 75 I've ever seen. Tough call, but then again, I am a biased early-car guy myself.

only if you are willing to shell out the money for more horsepower.

You're not alone unfixed, my 75 has had its share of electrical grief too. It's worth all of the stress in the end!

Compared to my 912 (150hp 2.4L 914 T4), the 911T would be a slug too. I would miss the power but these early cars are rare to find in this shape. Tough call but I know the 75 will win out in the end. It's funny that the only reason this came up is that my friend likes silver cars better than yellow ones... and I like early cars better than the big bumpered ones. Above all though, I like power!

If you lay awake some nights thinking about pre-impact bumper 911s, then I would probably swap -- that's one beautiful -- and clean -- '73 911T. Oh, and I love the colour!

But if the thought of owning a pre-impact bumper 911 doesn't keep you up at night, then the '73 T should be treated like a temptress who wants to steal you from the bosom of a woman whom you're deeply committed to.

Stick with the 911S. It's just too nice to swap.

911S. You know the car, it's yours (you own it), and it sounds like you modified it nicely. Why start over? Fiberglass bumpers will probably drop you down to a '73 T's weight. A 7.31 r/p will seal the deal. At that point, it should absolutely be no contest.
