Very few early 911 cars on ebay

Anyone else notice how few early cars are on ebay at this time?

Is the market this hot?

I haven't posted in quite a while. Have you bought a car yet or still looking?

I think it's on fire. When I was looking for most of last year, it was insane. Maybe not pricewise, but every POS that was a whole car sold quickly. Rollers lagged a little. I think the market for 912s is gonna heat up now. Why? Because if one wants to make a hot rod, this is a great place to start. I bet I could buy a clean title 912 roller complete with everything but engine and trans for a grand or less.

I was shocked yesterday to note how few 911s older than '85 there were. eBaymotors is dominated by 996 & 993s at the moment.

It was inevitable that the market would dry up. I'm starting to feel it with a wave of inquiries from all over the world on the 911E I sold last December.

A surge of inquiries on my '73 3.0 lately, too. Wish I had a few more sitting around.

Try watching craiglist too, if there is one where you live (what area are you in, SoCal maybe?). I've found it a good place to buy used stuff and there are lots of older 911s listed - although, oddly enough, most of the SC/Carreras currently listed on the SF Bay Area craiglist are targas.

Only one older one on L.A. Craigslist.

But there is a 'take over payments' deal on a 2002 GT2!

Only $2700 a month!

I noticed the same thing on Thursday (always got an eye open for a '73 or 72 Signal Yellow specimen, so I check every coupla days). It's odd, but I don't think the market's drying up -- maybe just a statistical anomaly.

Hey, Slacker! (I'd have PM'd you but your settings don't allow it).

My '73 with 3.0 is Signal Yellow under the crummy black paint job!

I've got a signal yellow 1970 T Targa with a converterd "S" engine in it. Just bought it for $7500 after I found it on the SF Porsche Club website a few months back. 4000 miles on the engine and new 901 tranny. LOVE this pre -smog, no AC car. Goes like a bat out of hell. Keep looking guys, you too might get lucky! Ken

I think e-bay changed the format or there is some kind of glich. Scroll down the 911 listings for about a page or two and the early 911 listings start again.

Yep, I noticed that too. I usually sort Porsche 911 listings by year (early cars first), and when I got to page 3, there were a bunch of early cars listed.

Also, you Cali people may not realize this, but in some parts of the country it's winter Not much sportscar selling happens when there's snow on the ground

I think seller of quality early cars generally avoid eBay, since most rational bidders apply a discount to their bid due the unknown body factor. If I had a great early 911 FS, I'd list it here, Rennlist, the registries, PCA.org, local PCA and other strong PCA regions, and call well known shops to tell them about the car. I wouldn't sell it on eBay because I don't know I would get (1) a great price (2) a good buyer. I've owned a bunch of Porsches over time, and, unless the deal is *incredible* I would rather pay a premium (as a buyer) and deal with a normal enthusiast owner than an unreliable idiot. Life's too short to deal with a lot the things that occur during an auto transaction.

If you go to completed auctions, notice that a lot of early 911 ads ended early (because the item is no longer for sale). In other words, somebody got to them and snatched them up before the auction ended.

I watched ebay for months before giving up and finding one in Classic Auto Trader.

It's a pretty strange market.
In ~1991 the SC's were around ~25k and then overnight dropped to 15k. Some have gotten 993's for 25k, and some still think they can sell a non-running SC-with-four-different-bald-tires for the same amount.
Some think an early 911 roller painted (nicely and rust-fixed?) should be 3k or way below and some think 5k(o.k. that my bias).

Law of statistics will mean the concours winners will continue to earn top dollar. And law of humanity means a percentage each year will crash them into trees, let them rot, make them into race-only shells, or bling-bling them into phosphorescent eternity.

Good time to sell?

I thought it was an error in the Ebay system too, until I done a advanced search and the same few cars came up. It's got me thinking about selling mine if they are in high demand. I want a 69-73 Targa and wont be happy until I get one.

There are fewer early BMW E30 listed too. Anyone got an better answer?

Mr. Plavan hit it on the head, ebay has changed their format. And not for the better. Why "fix" something that isn't broken?? Really chaps my ass.

They didn't just change it, they screwed it up. The search engine isn't working right either. It's missing items that clearly should be listed. I've always been amazed at the Ebay web pages and servers ability to carry so many auctions that are constantly changing and updating. At the same time, after doing a search for a range of specific years of a model and then not be able to re-sort those columns. I had a saved link that would give me the 65-85 911's in one click after starting my browser, but I cant re-sort by year after that search. So usually I have to go through so many other screens to get what I want. Not a problem at home with broadband, but any dial up service is painfully slow. Hopefully this is a failed attempt to soon be able to re-sort any column at any time. As complex as it already is, this should be possible.

Anybody currently listing items on Ebay are not getting the service they are paying for. I would demand a refund if people can't find my item through routine searches and browsing.

Just like I said before we invaded Iraq, I'll say it again, "I hope somebody knows what they are doing."

I think some guy in Nigeria is buying them all up, I think he's trying to corner the market or something. He said he'd mail a cashiers check for mine?
