What should I do?

My old man just bought a 1974 911 RS replica. It cost the previous owner $180,000 AUD to build! My father got it for $55,000 AUD -- a steal. It's done only 4,000kms since it was built by my late mechanic, John Gregory.

He said that if I wanted it I could have it, the obvious proviso being the sale of my pride and joy -- a '74 Carrera 2.7, which is worth between $50-60k.

I've always wanted a 911 with a pumped-up body, and in black! In my opinion, no other manufacturer save for Lamborghini has built something with as much road presence.

This RS replica has a 2.9, twin-plug MFI motor, a close-ratio 915 with a cooler, an LSD, 917 brakes, SSIs, genuine '73 RSR-spec 9 x 11" Fuchs, a genuine IROC tail, a brake ducting kit, a racing fuel cell, and a 10,000rpm tacho.

This car is amazing: everything, save for the '74 tub on which it was built -- and the Fuchs -- was bought new.

What should I do? I love my car, but this '74 RS replica is my dream car.

Matt? I don't like the tail on the black car. That said? "you gotta follow that dream whever it leads you..." -Elvis

Keep your car and ask to borrow dad's keys once in a while.

So what is the difference between a 1974 911 RS and a '74 Carrera 2.7?

stomachmonkey 02-14-2004 06:58 PM

Your current car is sweet but I'd grab the black one and start calling myself Mr. Vader.

Matt, don't taunt us, man! How lucky can you get!!! 2.9, twin plug, MFI, and those flairs... :D

Ho Hum 74 02-14-2004 07:20 PM

I know this is sacrilege but a duck tail would complete it perfectly!

stealthn 02-14-2004 07:23 PM

Looks more like an RSR clone than RS.

Follow your heart and hope your pocket book can follow.

geof33 02-14-2004 07:30 PM

yep... RSR... I need to clean myself now...

Beautiful car... I'd be all over it.

fintstone 02-14-2004 09:51 PM

Chuck is right. Keep both. Keep your car as a driver and borrow Dad's car now and then.

nostatic 02-14-2004 10:01 PM

holy crap.

dd74 02-14-2004 10:58 PM

What a strange proposal.

Is there something Dad doesn't like about the car you have now?

If I were you, I'd keep what you have, because I'm certain your father will give you many opportunities to take his car out for drives.

Fathers are strange, though. Mine bought me a bunch of tools, giving me the subtle hint that it's time I drop my mechanic and start working on my car myself.

So I changed a bulb in my speedometer and called it a draw.

Hmmm...maybe I'll give the tools to Tyson.

Well anyway, good luck...not that you need any...

:D

Are you guys sure it's an RSR replica? I thought the '74 RSR had those super-wide, vented flares ...

My old man is not what you would call a Porschephile, or even a car geek. He just knew that this replica was great value at $55K. He also knows I'm quite fond of it!

He's offered me the car because he knows that a weekend jaunt will be enough for him.

I think I'm going to take him up on his offer.

Some questions:

Will street rubber be expensive?

Will I need to buy a second oil cooler for it? Apparently these 2.9s run hot -- hotter than 2.7s and 2.8s.

What's it going to be like on the track compared to my Carrera 2.7?

If I buy it, I will get a ducktail for it -- to accentuate the flares!

k9handler 02-14-2004 11:54 PM

Matt...that car is awesome.

Street tires could be expensive, but well worth the cost.

Second cooler...does it have just the front mounted cooler and the engine cooler? You could add fender mounted cooler for less than $500 (US) but you should be concearned with airflow as well. How is the front cooler installed...is it getting optimum airflow through it?

If I were you....take it!!!

SteveF_911 02-15-2004 01:08 AM

Do it and go and play with Rex Broadbent............

I saw his in Classic Adelaide, what more could any early Porsche lover want.

Victor 02-15-2004 01:09 AM

Whoa. What a car! If your dad scored all that for $55K, no offense but good luck getting the same for your 74!

I say go for it - that sounds like an offer too good to pass up on.

And you better go faster than 1:13's around Calder in it....;)

I'm jealous!

Victor 02-15-2004 01:27 AM

Wow! Who deleted all my duplicated posts? An the last one? Noticed I also just went back from 1163 to 1144????

Am I stuck in the PP twilight zone?? I swear I have only had 3 beers!

Mikkel 02-15-2004 01:29 AM

I really like your yellow car. It has something about it. I can't put it into words, but I just like it the way it is.

Now the Black Beast on the other hand also has something about it. Brutal and classic. Just look at the wheels! Damn they look good (and damn are you going to have trouble finding new tires for them heh heh).

If it's your dream then go for it! Dreams are what Porsches are about.

Lower it, keep that whaletail and name the car Black Beast

Here is a photo of my office. Look at the poster sitting above my desk, and the toy hanging from the ceiling near my desk …

<img SRC="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7/new_hq_05.jpg" height=450 width=600>

I think I was meant to have this “black beast!”

Further proof is the silhouette of a cowboy that can be seen in the close-up of the IROC tail.

<img SRC="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7/cowboy_face.jpg" height=375 width=500>

My father was born and raised in Lookout, California. Genetically, I’m a bona fide cowboy.

Larry Harris 02-15-2004 05:39 AM

Victor,
It was I who deleted your posts. The voices made me do it.

Matt, the black car is awesome.
