Would your car choose you? The poseur test

This is an interesting question posed by K8handler in the Miata thread. I thought it deserved it's own.

The point is, we all choose our cars unilateraly. The car has no say.

For most, this is at least partly driven by selecting a car that reflects our self-image. Or at least the image we'd like to project.

But what if the car had a say? Would your car choose you?

I submit this as the ultimate poseur test.

What kind of owner would a 911 choose? Do you measure up?

Hey Chuck...+1 on the user name will ya. Ha Ha

I don't know what made me think of that question, I guess it was the HEFEWEIZEN or something.

I think my car would choose me as I consider myself a true Porsche guy...I live, eat, think etc Porsche 24-7 (just ask my wife and kids) to the point that anyone who knows me can tell you something about my 911. If I were a wealthy guy and could purchase a higher end 911 my ol' gal would not be sold off, she would still be my daily driver!

SO...I think my car would choose a guy like me.

Sadly, the car would probably choose the concours guy.

I do not qualify.

But then again, with the mods I've done, no concours guy wants my car. So I guess the car is stuck with me. Ain't engine swaps grand.

Considering all the work I do on it, it sure as hell ought to!

One query: if K8handler = Miata, and K9handler posts here (Porsche),
does F&r#@ri get K10handler??

I think my car would choose me, cuz, I bought her for the simple reason, I love the car. I bath, buff, polish my girl. My wife is jealous. She likes the way I dress her, and likes her new shoes. She really appreciated the freshening she recieved for her heart, and soon she'll be getting new ligaments and tendons (bushings, motor/tranny mounts).

She'd pick me as love at first site. Plus, she knows she is not a trophy date to look cool hanging off of my arm. Simple, mutual, love. (can you tell it's Valentine's day?)

With my luck, I'd get stuck with a Pacer. I guess that's better than being tailed by a Ford Probe.

I think that's one of the cooler questions posted here in a long while, Chuck.

I ran it by my wife, and her response was: "You're crazy. All you Porsche guys are crazy."

So I think it's fair to say a 911 wouldn't choose her.

When are these cars happiest? I think it's when they're running through a high speed sweeper, or slaloming through the mountains. A Porsche's favorite owner might be a guy who travels for a living -- maybe a salesman or delivery guy in the Alps.

Not a doubt in my mind...I wouldn't qualify as a 911 owner. No designer clothes, no gold rolex, most of my tools are craftsman brand, I don't live in a McMansion, my wife refuses to bleach her hair and/or have cosmetic surgery...the list goes on. I'm just a Big Ugly Fat Fellah who has enjoyed the same car for nearly 3 decades...;

A guy driving a Red 911 convertible probably conjurs up certain images or stereotypes to most people...

But those steretypes are not me...not really.

I think all 911's would pick owners that like them for the way they DRIVE. Not necessarily the way they look either (form follows function, there aren't do-dads just for looks). Not the status symbol thing, babe magnet thing, pretend racer but shift below 3000 rpm thing, etc. I can't explain it in words but another Porsche-head would know and I think the car understands too.

Related to this question, if you choose a car, and it responds by repeatedly breaking down, is it protesting your choice? Is it saying, "Piss off you poor ba$tard, I want someone who will do a total and proper restoration, instead of this one thing at a time nonsense. I'm not a daily driver, I'm a Porsche, now sell me and buy a Civic." Or maybe it's just all the straight roads in Kansas, I don't know.

Definately got to be someone who uses it more than a few miles a year. It's fairly obvious that these cars were built to drive, no matter what the conditions.

I think my car would choose me. I love and cherish my car, it wants for nothing, it gets a large amount of my attention and my wallet, and gets plenty of hard driving.
Owning a turbo is probably the same as dating a super-model (not that I have),high maintenance, cost you an arm and a leg, and always stands out in a crowd. I wouln't swap her for anything and I think she wouldn't want another owner, I take really good care of her.
My wife thinks I'm obsessed and calls it my mistress, Jack's wife is right, we are all crazy.

I think my car would choose me. I am a cop who loves to drive fast. As soon as my skills match my car's capabilities, It will be a match made in heaven.

My car did choose me. My owner of seven years has treated me very well, so has the co-owner of three years, and yes, I am crazy.

well, I took it to the hospital when it was sick, and drive it every single day It gets to sleep inside at night, and spend a lot of days at the beach checking out topless cars. At night it gets to go to gigs, come home late, and sometimes have a good looking female vocalist riding shotgun.

What's not to like?

Let's see, Paul you're good. Your car is happy.

We are not crazy, obsessd maybe, but not crazy.

My wife has told me for 20 years I would look good in a 356 Speedster. Well, who wouldnt'? BTW, I had a 356 coupe and didn't care for it much. Don't let the 356 boys see this, but I'd rather have a bug if I'm gonna have less than 1600cc.

My car would have chosen anyone who would bring it back to life. At this writing, the old dame has reawakened with a vengence and is stalking younger pray. With a face lift, she'll be sassy and spank some while politely stepping aside for others. We're a good match in that respect.

(I really don't like talking about cars in the feminine sense. Like boats. How else do you refer to a car with personality? It's not a he; it's not a she; it's an it. But it tells you things, so it has it's personality. Anthropomorphism)

Interesting, there are many different interpretations of what type owner a 911 would want.

Personally, I don't think 911s want concourse baby-and-polish type owners. Certainly they would run from status-seekers, incompetent drivers, neglectful owners, and those who make mods that are in unquestionably poor taste.

I think 911s want owners who drive them hard and frequent. Who work both heel and toe to make them go faster. Who think the redline is a suggested engine speed. Who take them on long stretches of twisty roads or tracks to let them run. Who maintain them in peak condition so they can drive on the edge without failure. JMHO.
