Cliff
whats the problem
cut the belt take the alt out and find a shop that will zap the nut off with a air wrench

vash 02-20-2004 05:49 PM

it is dripping with PB blaster. the greasy bastard nut!
thanks zeke. i am going to try to piece together a pulley that will work with the spanner. i am not going to go outta my way to save the airpump, but i will try. i will let you know if it works. or weld together a stronger two prong pulley wrench. i cant believe it isnt thicker. i think heat will work too, i just loaned out the torch to a weekend wannabe plumber.

my belt is brand new!

I didn't want to hear that. Now we both know who tighten the nut up too tight.

And your *new* belt is toast with all that PB on it. Save it to stake a tree.

you know what, i didnt think i could tighten it that much. i mean i didnt, i even used my 3/8 drive wrench and that tiny 10" pulley wrench. let me quote wayne in his book, 101 proj....
"make sure to tighten the pulley completely. tighten it as much as you can, then turn the starter over a bit, and retighten..............you wont be able to tighten it any more no matter how hard you try." damn zeke and i are monsters! i did lift two 80lb-er doing dumb-bell presses the other day...hmmm.

As the folks on the Guiness commercials say, BRILLIANT! Cliff, if you recall, didn't I suggest something on this order during your CIS ordeal, wasn't it a 3.6 with PMOs? I believe that would solve all of both of our current problems, what with our cursed cars and all.:D I've quit posting my problems, I'm now suffering in silence. Well, FWIW the home made impact sounds like a good idea, I probably would have tried cheaters on both, and just broken something. If nothing else, cutting the belt isn't too bad, and scrap the air pump, that'll be more free HP! And knock off all those 12oz curls, it's killing your car.;)

i made a tool with a flat bar of 1/4"steel about 2 foot long...drill two holes in it the same distance apart and the same diameter as the porsche tool. cut out the arc with a hack saw or band saw if you have one. get two strong bolts with nuts that protrude about a 1/2 past the nut....
the bar should then be able to be lodged against a block of wood, then use your 1/2 socket...a 1" id piece of plastic sewer pipe gives some leverage also for you socket..

should come off then.

Should you ever get the nut off? Be sure to check the number of washers. I could be off, somebody please correct me if am am, but I believe the correct number to be 6...

Joe Bob 02-20-2004 06:41 PM

No more no less, the number be 6, 6 be the number, the number before 7 and the one after 5....please skip the meat of it Brother.....

Then grasp the pin of the holy handgrenade....

rabbit stew, COMING UP!
nice monty python reference.

and 1whippedpuppy. dont you go suffering in silence, i need you man! you stories crack me up, starting with your car is fighting back thread!

vash 02-20-2004 07:38 PM

just outta curiosity, if i cut the belt and took it off, wouldnt that effectively take the load off the nut and it should come off easy? i dont know, i have the correct # of washers, does the belt hold the pulley up, i cant remember.

sammyg2 02-20-2004 08:24 PM

Nope, the pulley nut tightens against the washers, the belt just gets sandwiched in between.
If the nut is really tight against the washers removing the belt prolly won't make much difference.
A good sharp whack will provide much more momentary torque than a steady pull. That's the principle an impact gun works off of.
Take a wrench that fits over the pulley nut and hit it sharply with a hammer. make sure you hit the wrench, not your fingers or something that gets in the way. Try not to spin the engine backwards. You don't have to hit it really hard, but you have to hit it quick if you know what I mean. Repeat as necessary. If it doesn't come loose doing that, you're in trouble.

Early_S_Man 02-21-2004 12:24 AM

Cliff,

I hope you haven't cut the belt off yet! Put the trans in 5th gear and cinch the E-brake up real tight! Get a bar-style quick-release clamp, and pinch the belt in the middle, real tight ... after spraying & wiping down the belt and pulley with Brakleen or other degreasing solvent. If the nut isn't cross-threaded ... a 22 mm box-end wrench or six-point socket on a 1/2" breaker-bar will get the nut loose!

djmcmath 02-21-2004 07:48 AM

Cliff,
when I had trouble getting my nut off, I used a big rubber mallet, too. Worked like a charm, eventually. Takes some patience, and you've gotta be careful (like the good Dr. says) not to hit something important, like your fingers. Whack that sucker for a while with a rubber mallet, be patient, and you'll get that nut off. I think pulling the belt won't help any, but then, I don't really know anything about cars.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure you meant Goodall, in your gorilla reference, but it was pretty funny anyway. The real test is whether or not you feel the urge to pick bugs out of your friends' hair while munching on bananas. <smirk>
Oh, and BTW, when you go to turn the engine with the fan-belt nut, don't forget to put the transmission back in neutral, or it'll be just about impossible to turn that thing without slipping. Ask the guy who spent several hours confused trying to figure out why his brand-new fan-belt wouldn't tighten up enough to turn the engine... :)

Oh, so you want to know, do you? My crippled car is sitting in the garage looking pathetic, thanks to the Weber sitting beside it, and my a$shole still hurts from the $200 (!!!!) raping from Pierce Manifolds for oversize throttle shafts. $200, but "oh we should be able to fit that in an envelope for you", thanks guys. Actually, I shouldn't b!tch, other than the price, they were really good to deal with. I've been considering replacing the fan belt this weekend after I wax my rust, but if that goes wrong my car will officially become a smorgasboard of f-ups. How would I diagnose my problems if I f-up a pulley, have a only halfway dialed in optical trigger, $hitty timing, and a freshly repaired Weber? Normally, when I'm aggravated with something on it, I'll just go for a drive, and the little lightbulb will come on "oh yeah, that's why I'm doing this". Sadly, that's not an option now, my pregnant wife won't even push me down the street, what's up with that? Should be like two people pushing, right?:D Hey now, you asked. ;) Oh yeah, I second the other's advice, beat the hell out of it, either you'll break it (3.6!), or fix it, regardless something will happen, and that's half the battle!

Jane Goodall = Anthropologist equated with Dr. Leakey

Diane Fossey = Gorilla Fund International

you were right

pwd72s 02-21-2004 09:44 AM

FWIW, Stoddard sells a 2 prong wrench that is sturdier than the factory one, and definitely stronger than the ones you see offered on ebay and other places.

vash 02-21-2004 10:17 AM

ok, i got it. i soaked the nut with pbblaster over night. i even got up at around 4am to let the dog out to pee. at least that is what i told the girlfriend, wink wink. i gave it another blast. it came off without much debate. holy crap! what is with early s man? warren is the go-to guy! i need to start printing his responses because they are nice tricks. thank to everyone, especially the ones that made me laugh.

1whipped, WE WILL GET IT TOGether soon.! let us know when your baby decides to join us out here. pwd72, thanks for the stoddard ref.

djmcmath 02-21-2004 10:41 AM

Dr. Leakey, coincidentally, worked on anthropology. Goodall's related work was studying chimps for a long time in the field. http://www.wcsu.edu/cyberchimp/DRJANE.html

<sigh> So I was close, at least. :) Cliff was actually right both ways in his first guess at it. Aargh.

Anyhow, congrats on getting that fan nut off, I had faith in you the whole time. :)

ZOA NOM 02-21-2004 11:52 AM

remember, righty-tighty when you put it back on. ;)

onewhippedpuppy 02-21-2004 12:35 PM

Good job getting your nut off Cliff ;) , have your girlfriend put it back on for you to avoid this problem in the future. I've never met you in person, but you must be a beast of a man. There's nothing PB Blaster can't beat though. I wonder how it is on leaky carbs.......
