i need a trick. fan nut. HELP!
i have no idea how the damn thing got so tight! i have taken it off several times without issues. it is like some gorilla got into my garage and torqued it down. i have the two pronged pcar tool that pokes into holes in the pulley. then i use a standard halfinch drive and i apply gobs of pressure. i bent the pulley tool! i need a trick please! i am trying to get the alt out to continue troubleshooting. do i need to fabricate a sturdier tool? very frustrating.

Can you get a length of steel pipe that slides over the pulley tool fairly snuggly & adds a little length for leverage. If its snug enough it might prevent the tool bending more as well. & you know for best leverage you need to 'squeeze' the pulley tool & the driver together right?

ok, wise guy.
![]() by the way, can i switch over to the pulley that uses the spanner tool? i think it is for the newer cars? i hate that piece of crap two pronged tool. it is a major knucklebuster waiting to happen. i will happily toss the airpump in order to do so.

If you can find another person to help and have a large hollow 2 piece handle from your floor jack then you can put each part of the handle over the wrench and the pulley tool. One of you hold the pulley tool in place, while the other leverages the wrench. That should do it and be careful not to over tighten when you put it back (and keep the gorilla out of your garage).

I would soak the nut with a little PB blaster and let it sit overnight. If you've already bent the factory tool, then applying more leverage with a cheater bar really won't do much except bend it more. One trick that may work is to whack the rachet with rubber mallet a few times to generate some impact (like an impact air gun might).

Dude, go to a gas station with an impact. OR, come to my house across the bay, I have an impact air gun (among other interesting tools)

thanks yelcab, i dont think an impact gun can get to it. the back panel of the car will get in the way. these car are haunted, at least mine and onewhippedpuppy's are. it is running strange,(having a hard time idleing). i swear i spent money on the car, i dont know why it is pissed. haha. my pcar mech said to bring it in and he will show me a trick. i promise to pass it on. i am going to switch it over to the other pulley that uses the spanner wrench, i hate that cheapo two prong thing. i am going to toss it off a bridge. hope i dont choke a passing sealion.

It'd be very hard to get to that nut with an air gun, unless you're an artist with a universal. The jackhandle trick worked for me about a month ago, but if you bent a factory tool, you must be a gorilla, or its hopeless. Yank it and put in a 3.6.

Unfixed, I have heard that heat applied to the nut along with some sharp whacks will nudge the nut. You should have a new belt on hand as the heat will not do the old one any good. Whenever I heat something, I try to anticipate what collateral damage I might do. So, I try to provide a heat sink just beyond what needs to be heated. In this case, a wet towel warped around the pulley itself would help. Of course, this is all theory at this point as far as mine pulley nut goes. Haven't had the time to get back to that job. If I do it, I will post a follow up. Last edited by Zeke; 02-20-2004 at 05:44 PM.. |
