Seriously though, Mike, there was a twin-engine 356 built by Lou Fageol. Two 1.5L engines; one in back, one in front. I'll look for a photo ..... -- Curt

Z, Call Randall at Foreign Coachworks. http://www.foreigncoachworks.com/ I think I have heard stories of him trying that.

Apparently, I'm bored too .... because I've got another idea. Take your 914 chassis, drop in the 2.4 and bolt the 356 body onto it. It's already been done with a VW Beetle .....

My old man did this - dropped a 2.7 into a '64 SC. I don't know much about the build however it was pretty interesting thing to drive.
The car was found in the US in need of a major restoration, the engine was put in by a guy in Vegas (apparently has his own test track). The car was then shipped out to Australia, converted and completely restored. 901 4 speed gearbox, 15x7's, 911 discs and callipers with bias, 930 rear torsion bar, half cage, recaros etc. He ended up with a pretty mean little 356 that he ran in four Targa Tasmania Rallies (winning his class and category). It didn’t handle that well, but you definitely knew you where driving. I raced it in a couple of club level events - the guys in mid-80's Carreras couldn't understand how a little 356 was recording faster times... the perfect sleeper. |

Mike
His was fuel injected... there was no need to cut anything from the engine bay, however he did need to remove a couple of the bars that stiffen the engine lid so you could close it. I don't think you'd need to do this if you used carbies though. Nick |

One of the very fastest cars at bogus basin hillclimb is a highly tweeked maroon 356 cab with a 3.0L shoehorned in it.
Man that thing was wicked fast.

I like the idea of a 914 chassis, appropriately shortened. Add a 3.5S or 3.6Chip, stir with appropriate hardware. Cut the bottom off a ’53 or so coupe and graft it to the 914 chassis with a cage. Of course maintain the 356 serial number and interior appearance. If you want to make an attempt toward originality, keep the front suspension with C spindles. That front suspension actually can work as well as the McPherson struts. Any 911 brake can be adapted.
Do it properly with all Porsche parts and take it to a Registry event. A new meaning for 356 B as the Professor rolls over. Best, Grady
