as the puddle of oil gets bigger...

i am weighing my options. why cant the oil return tubes on the passenger side leak? NNNOOO! it is the friggen drivers side. i have some threaded plugs coming from jim sims, so the air pump will be 86'ed. then i am staring at the crusty nuts on my exhaust. i have to drop everything! premuffler, heatexchangers....!! PITA! i have to drop the muffler to get to my tensioner upgrade. i will measure my house windows this week, get the estimate for new windows. and if i have any more cash left over, i am going to order new SSI's and dansk muff from wayne. in the honor of my "pisspoorplanning" club membership, i will have to get rid of my brandnew crossover tube to tstat oil cooler line. i havent even discoloured it yet. so let me run this by you. shopping list, SSI's, muffler, new crossover tube, new oil line, tensioner kit, four oil return tubes, case of oil....oh! my stomach hurts...(maybe i will bolt back up old stuff) those crusty nuts are agonizing me! i got to get the car started first. (see tiny spark thread) why do i love this car?

Well, I know someone by now has suggested the source of the injection pump / wires / rusty exhaust nuts / little spark / leaking return tubes.......

You need a new screename.

I'd bet "Finally Fixed" is available.

Cliff, I nominate you for President of the pisspoorplanning club. I'd nominate you for treasurer, but I'm afraid you'd use our funds to buy your SSIs.

Cliff-
I've got a crossover oil line (the type for use with SSIs) that I bought from Pelican and never used. It's brand new and sitting in a closet in my garage. Why do I have it? Consider me a cardholding member of the pisspoorplanning club. Email or PM me.

ok, on a technical note. the oil return tubes, with the car sitting still, they are full of oil? looks like i am leaking from the valve cover side, that is the uphill side right? the disadvantage of having superclean oil, is that oil leaks can be tough to find. ironic.

Worse case scenario:
Clean the drainplug areas so you can re-use the oil.
Get all new exhaust nuts and put the old heat exhcangers back on using anti-seze and new gaskets. That way in a few months when you have more cash, you can easily install the SSI's and just re-use the gaskets. A little more work, but not too bad and you don't duplicate too much work. The muffler is easily removed, so the tensioners can be done anytime (assuming yours aren't going bad).

Hey, if you're taking it apart, might as well go all out, right? Windows, get some plastic sheeting and buy those SSIs! This coming from a guy with rusty heat exchangers, the holes of which are currently plugged with JB Weld (amazing stuff!). You better get with the program, my slow-ass machine shop is sure to get my carb done someday, I might beat you back on the road yet!

Unfixed, if you are trying to save some money, I have a set of 4 steel collapsable oil return tubes that were on my '86 for about 8 months. (I went back to solid steel tubes on my rebuild) They are in excellent condition. The green seals look new. You can have all 4 for $50.00 if that will help you keep costs down.

If you don't have access to an oxy-acetylene torch (you can actually buy the tiny kit at Home Depot), cut those rusty nuts off with a dremel. The cutter for the dremel should be a carbide cutter.

My nuts and a Dremel

Read the above thread and the link that island911/Glenn provides on page 2

thanks kurtV, nice offer. but it is really the big ticket items...well i shouldnt really be complaining, at least it isnt my daily driver. and i did get the car free

i am going to get my car started, sparkplug wires, hopefully. and then shut it down and take care of the leaks. i have been running a plan through my head. i actually think i can install the tubes with all the crap in place. getting the old ones out, seem to be the problem. i will post pics of my strategy, pass or fail.. still going to scrap the air pump tho.

Someone suggested (I think Wayne) that you put baby powder on the regions where you think the leak is coming from. The look for it in your newly formed puddle.

Disclaimer: I have not tried this myself.

Hope you find joy soon.
