911 engine stalling
Just bought an 87 911, starts and idles fine, revs and runs great, BUT, once you have put your foot on the throttle, you must let it off GENTLY or the engine will stall. Once its dying, putting your foot back on the throttle doesn't change anything, it will still die. Will rev and run high rpms, pulls strong. Start it and let it sit and idle, without touching the gas pedal it will run forever. Ideas on where to start looking for a solution ?/ thanks, Jeff

The 3.2L motronics don't have an EGR(?) to mess with the equation, so I'm guessing an electronic one involving the TPS or airflow sensor wiring. Since it pulls strong, fuel pressure and spark should be good, but after snapping closed the throttle and opening it on the way down, the engine still doesn't catch, and even manually adding air doesn't help the mix. The spark components aren't involved, so that would have fuel or air left. Both are somewhat controlled by the computer. Something must be telling the computer to superflood or superlean the mix(?) Motronix is a L-jetronic("luft"or air flow volume measure), as opposed to the K-jet (78-83CIS) or D-jet (MAP/manifold vaccum sensors that a lot of other companys use), so those are the only 2 things I can think of to measure airflow. Unless there is a trottle-closed switch misadjusted, that's my best guess. Change the fuel filter and check the pressure at the rail just for the heck of it. It's a good excuse to find out where everything's at on the way. |

Thanks for the reply, Searching through old postings, I may have found a couple of possible solutions, from problems reported just like mine. 1) idle switch malfunction 2) Open up the adjustment on the throttle a hair, so the idle valve isn't the only thing supplying air at idle. I will test both items when I get the engine back in the car, fixing oil leaks right now, then I'll get the idle fixed, then I'll get new rear sway bar mounts, then I'll fix the drivers window................ Someday I'll buy a car I don't have to tear apart as soon as I buy it. Never worked on a Porsche before, this way I learn about the car before I start driving it. Thanks, Jeff
