What would you do?

Ok here's the scoop,

I currently have a "66 912 that the PO installed a 2.0E with Zenith's and a '70 901 trans as well as fiberglass update to '74 RS. I installed a 3.0 with the same Zenith's modified with larger venturis for the 3.0 and added 17" cup wheels. I love the car but hate the short wheelbase.

I also have a widebody targa roller project and short case G50, the car includes all the suspension, a leather power recaro interior, all gages, two hoods, two sets of doors, two rear glass, basically everything but a motor.

My current plan is to return the 2.0 to the '66 and sell it, then put the 3.0 into the targa with a megasquirt setup. As for the interior I plan to sell everything and go for the race car look i.e. two sparcos and a roll bar. On the outside I'm planning on fiberglass for the fenders, hood, tail and 964 turbo front and rear bumpers and skirts.

This would mean I can sell:
1 rear targa glass
1 set of doors
1 complete interior
2 hoods
1 rear bumper
1 Tea tray turbo look wing in mint condition
7's and 8's 15" Fuchs lookalikes form the old car
other misc stuff.

I have no idea what the '66 might sell for or the rest of the parts for that matter but I'd like to eventually end up with a turbo or supercharged motor in the new car and I'd like to buy most of the stuff I'd need with the money from selling all this stuff. I could even sell the 3.0 to offset a turbo if the right one came along.

I don't plan on getting to serious about selling the '66 until I've finished the body on the targa so I'm looking at about 6-12 months depending on money and time, any suggestions?

I think you have a plan already. I would make sure you have one driving car at all times. That means either getting the 2.0 ready and swap that in the 66 in a short amount of time, or ot means getting the body of the widebody targa ready and swapping the 3.0 over quickly.

In my book nothing is worse than a car on blocks. Do yourself a favor and keep only one car in that state.

Now, last question... is the 912 a targa too? I like the racecar and turbo idea, but why do it to a targa?

Cheers, George

Sell the roller and put aluminum trailing arms on the 912.

Actually the bad part about the roller is that it is a targa, not my first choice. but I got it for a nice trade from my brother. I've seriously though about going long wheelbase on the '66 but that involves a new torsion tube and I'm not thrilled with that idea. Selling the roller is an option but it needs a lot to be finished including front fenders and bumper and the fact that it's basically completely disassembled except for it's original suspension. I am an esperienced welder so I quess I could install a torsion tube and the Carrera suspension from the roller along with brakes etc. One crazy idea I had a while back was to go long wheelbase on the '66 by way of a coilover rear supported with a rollbar. Good ideas guys, keep 'em coming.

Oh as for not having a car during transformation, i just bought a new Ranger as a daily driver and I won't be doing anything to the '66 until next fall.

Beautiful car!

The good sides to doing my Targa are that it is already most of the way stripped down, it already has steel rear flares installed, and I'd have more money to work with selling the '66 vs. selling the roller. Plus the Targa is a '78 so the galvanized body is a plus. And I wouldn't have to sell the '66 til the Targa is near drivable.

Did you do the cab conversion yourself? This is something I looked into but I don't care for the look of rollbars in a convertable. Is that an RS America front bumper?

Double hoop? You mean like an Audi TT? Can you send a pic or link for me to see?

The problem with modding the '66 really comes down to money, if I sell it as a complete runner I will get quite a bit more than if I sold the roller with lots of missing pieces. I suppose the best bet would be to sell both and just buy a 911T coupe to start with but then I'm without a car for awhile. I can spend on it if I need to but I'd prefer to primarily use the proceeds from selling the stuff I have. (keeps the wife happier LOL)

Why not sell the 66 and the roller, and invest in a solid coupe shell? From the power you're thinking of putting into the new car, the coupe would probably give you less headaches (chassis flex as well as rust issues, and the fact that coupes rock).

Either way, it seems like a fun quandary to be in.

I've given a lot of thought to selling both but I'd have to have something older that 1979 in order to escape the dreaded emissions testing. I'm not sure I can find a clean rust free roller at a price I'm willing to pay, remember all I need is the body.

For now I'm gonna inventory everything I don't need so that I can offer it for sale here and at the Hershey swap meet.
