Old Porsche Racing Advertisements

Unfortunately, many of these are quite small. Anybody got any other adverts showing the link between Porsche race and road cars????

Curt,

I have those two 917 ads, too, and the first one is unique in that it shows Siffert's 917PA in the final chisel-nose configuration used at the very end of the '69 season, one that is very seldom seen in print! I have an old Polaroid shot of #0 on the transporter at Texas International Speedway after the race ... about to depart! He was only 3.5 seconds per lap slower than the M8B's ... about 120 hp down from the aluminum 430 Chevy's ... still finished 4th, though!

Neither Frere or Ludvigsen have a shot of that nose in their books!

That almost looks like some Texas landscape in the background - maybe they shot the ad after the race, Warren!

The ad with the 917, 911, and 914 brings back some memories. I was a young kid working a Porsche dealer then, and I clearly remember the first 911's that came in off the truck that were over $10,000. I recall all the salesmen standing around looking at the car. One guy throws his hands up in the air and says, "Well, that's it. The 911 is over ten grand now. NO ONE is going to pay ten grand for a sports car. We'll never sell another one."

I just looked thru my race program from the '72 Sebring 12 hours (Yes, I bought it at the race because I was there!) Porsche didn't have an ad in it and they won the race in '71 with the 917.

Strange?

Great ads - thanks Curt.

Out of curiosity, what years were the $36,000 ad and the $143,000 ad?

Doug,

The 914/917PA ad came out in the spring of 1970.

The 914/911/917-10 ad was run in 1974.

That last one is Al Holbert at Sebring in about '75.

Curt,

That 906 ad you just posted ... ran in Scientific American in early 1967!!! I have fond memories of the Porsche ads in that publication during the '60s ... a rather select market in those days!

Unfortunately I think that the marketing dept. favors New Money Quarterly over Scientific American these days.

That photo of Jo Siffert airborne in the 908/3 is fantastic, I don't remember seeing that before.

Shame how the target customer for Porsches has changed.

Maybe since Scientific American is now owned by a German firm, maybe the ads will come back.
