RSR Front Fender Vents
Can anyone shed some light on these front fender vents?
How common - if at all - were they? This car is in Australia, image courtesy of Australian VTK member Mike Gillies. Unknown to me at the time, this car was raced by the father of one of my karting peers of the mid '70's. ![]() Regards Hayden |

I've never seen them before. They look cool, but what are they venting???

Are they truly vents...or just black decals?

I've never seen vents like that before, they were probably put there to aid in the escaping brake heat. But that's just a guess. I know the '74 RSR had vents behind the fenders for this reason as the brakes got quite hot.

Here's another angle:
![]() It's hard to imagine holes in that location pulling much air out of the wheel well. And the car has a front oil cooler in any case.

That's Warwick Miller's RSR. It's a stunning car in the flesh and well known in Australia. It ran a high 12-second quarter on a curved quarter mile track during a local historic meet.
![]() They're real vents, too. I don't know what they're for.

Adam,
Do you know of any photo archive with that car in it's earlier race livery, Black with Castrol stripes? also it was LHD then too I believe. I am going to guess the blisters on the hood are for damper adjusters coming out through the center / top of the strut. Regards Hayden |

I've got a magazine at home somewhere that has a big story on that car. It was originally black and used for Kitten Car Care products print ads. The 2.8 supposedly makes 300bhp at 8,000rpm.
I'll have a look for the magazine and try to scan the article for you guys. From memory, it was apparently ordered with special factory options (plastic windows and fibreglass doors) which pared weight down to 870kg (1,917lbs)! Hence the 12.84 quarter mile at the Geelong Speed Trials.

What size flares are on that car? Are they 11" and 9"? For some reason, they don't seem that big on that color--looks nice.

just a thought but i read a while back (in porsche world magazine) about a guy that had a track 935 that he took to a wind tunnel. the guys at the wind tunnel advised him on various mods that would help him out. one of those mods was to install vents on the tops of the front wings to reduce positive pressure around the wheel, but are they big enough to make an impression? By the way, that blue RSR has 100% convinced me that my RSR Rep should be painted Gulf blue!
