I got word from the shop today that i will have to spend 6,900 to get the parts so that i wil be able to rebuild my own engine. the price is for pistons an a whole host of other things. any way that seems like a whole lot to spend and then turn around and have ot put it together myself. i was thinking that i should be able to get a good used 2.2 or 2.4 engine for this price but i don't know. or any better engine for that matter. or should i sell it as tub+ and cut my losses and look for a 70's p-car. any sugestions very much appretiated. !!!HELP!!!
btw the engine with new parts and stuff for the 6,900 would have 170-180 hp. again what sould i do? thanks -68'911 ![]() |

If you post a list of the actual parts people would be able to tell you if they are good deals. There is also a good chance that you can get a better price on the parts here at Pelican.

I wouldn't compare the price of a freshly rebuilt engine to another one unless you knew many factors, (who did it, what parts were used, how was it used before and after the rebuilt, what kind of care did the PO use.) Sound like too many variables? It is. The only way you know if your engine is done right is doing it yourself. That may add something to the price, but in the end it may be worth it.

Ouch.... seems a lot. Many owners are upgrading to larger, newer motors so you should be able to find a good motor. Unless originality is an issue, you ought to be able to pick up a 2.2, 2.4 or even a 3.0 for a heck of a lot less than $6800. If it were me, I'd look for a 3.0.
As a frame of reference, 3 mos. ago, I picked up a 78sc with a 3.2. The motor had 4-5% leakdown and compression is 160-165. I paid $5750....that was car and engine.

I have no idea what that total includes, but I just did a quick run through Wayne's Rebuild wizard and came up with a parts cost of $2031.90, without pistons/rings/cylinders or tools/chemicals.

well one piston has a hole in it, the rest have to be replaced because of bad scarring $1400 for set. $1900 for inspectiontion and basic rebuild parts(gaskits) and machining(honing etc.) , regrind cams $350, rebuilt oil pump $250, case savers $200, rebuilt 930 tensioners $300, port and polish heads, $300 thermostat $130, mill case deck is in there somewhere as is several sprokets that have to be replaced.
you're thinking it doesn't add up, that is what i think too with out futher inquiry. if i use my original engine it will be rebuilt by me not the shop, i just wanted them to test and diagnose any problems, seems like they found them. ![]() does anyone have any knowledge/info on the motor previouly mentioned that is for sale on the RGruppe site? thanks for the quick responses. -68'911 Last edited by 68'911; 03-08-2004 at 08:03 PM.. |

Is it important to have a period-correct engine? A motor that's been rebuilt by a high-end shop is a magnificent thing, but it's also an expensive thing. You might consider putting a 3.0, a 3.2 (or even a 3.6) in your car if you're not concerned about originality, or more interested in affordable performance.

Alot of that expense you can spare. Used oil pump out of a 76-8? $100 or so. ALso you can get used P&C's as long as there in spec for much cheaper. I found a set of 2.2E P&C's for around $500. A thermostat should be much cheaper if you buy a used one, I don't see any point in a new one since they don't wear.
WHy do you need to port and polish the heads for a basic rebuild? I belive you have 32mm ports which should be good for over 2.4 liters with the basic 911L cams.

There is a complete short stroke 2.5 liter with MFI and tranny for sale at a shop near me for $3200. Seems like a good deal to me. How does this compare to what you're finding on the market and on this board? Good luck. Jim

Like others have said here, if you want to rebuild your engine, you can save a bit on that quote by shopping around. The biggest expense are the pistons if you buy new Mahles, I bought 2.2S pistons for around $3,200 or so. Rebuilt heads were around $900 and reground cams around $400 (it's been over a year so I'm a bit rusty on remembring these numbers).
Add $1,000 for all the gaskets and misc soft parts. My total was close to $9,000 having all the work done by a shop. I can say that the engine runs great and I have no worries about reliability (knock on wood). I went through the same thing you are now. The biggest issue for me was I did not want someone elses used engine. This would mean I would still pay $5000 at least and have an engine that will probably need more work in the future. If you can find a fresh rebuild, with all the docs, from a reputable shop then jump on it, this would be the best bet if it's a good price. What you will realize if you put a 3.0 engine in is that you have to buy lots of 'other' parts too including either a 915 trans or an expensive adaptor for your trans I believe. My shop put a 3.0 engine in a customers '73 911 and the total bill came to $10k including the engine!! There's nothing inexpensive when it comes to replacing or rebuilding these engines. Be thankful you have the courage, time, and knowledge to do the work yourself! Good luck. -Dan |

Heck, you can buy my whole car for less then that with a strong 2.2l and a great trans. I am not trying to do a cheap plug on my car, but that seems like a ton of money for a rebuild.
