Women Say: 1973 RS Drivers Are "Sad Old Gits"

Sorry to burst your bubble, fellas, but the $64,000 question has been answered.

Classic Car magazine assembled a panel of women from their 20s to 50s - some rather attractive - and walked them through a museum of classic cars to find "The Cars That Get The Girl".

Sample reactions:
- Lamborghini Countach: "this is terrible . . . looks like a Knight Rider car" "rather pretentious . . . rather comical"
- Jaguar E-type Series 3 drophead: "quite feminine" "romantic and classy" "powerful and sleek"
- Shelby Cobra: "the shape is nice, but it reminds me of an old man's car" "horrible. Looks like Noddy's car" "an old boy racer's car"
- 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air: "penis extension" "one of the worst cars I've ever seen" "if a man came to collect me on a date in this, I'd hide"
- 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28: "porn star or once-famous actor who drives one of these"
- 1949 Cadillac Fleetwood Sedan: "this car really means business" "alll the chrome . . . lovely big seats" "Cary Grant [is driving this] and I am sitting alongside in my mink stole"
- 1931 Duesenberg Model J: [the man driving this would be] "very passionate . . . and we girls like that"
- Jaguar XJ220: "looks like Donald Duck's foot" "ageing rock star with questionable taste"
- Jaguar XJR convertible: "sophistication without ostentation"

And . . .

- 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS: "the style is quite nice but if a man turned up in an old one, he'd just look like a sad git who cannot afford a newer model" "I hate them. They look so cranky" "driven by estate agents" "no redeeming features at all".

I must leave off here - I'm clutching my heart as I type this - the heart of someone who apparently aspires to be a sad old git :-(

P.S.: Anyone have an E-type to trade for a cranky unredeemed G-50 Carrera?

Confucious say: The guy who tries to lure women with cars is a guy destined to drive alone.

Women like flowers, furniture and houses -- and (so they say) a sense of humor.

(The latter comes in handy when you're shopping for real estate.)

Porsches are (generally) one of the ways we get some time away from the ladies.

Sad, but true.

Most women, most people, view all 911s as status symbols. Newer = more expensive = more better.

Hence any early 911 is viewed as a weak and failed attempt at owning a status car. After all, if the owner could have afforded a new one he surely would have bought a new one.

356s escape this stigma. They are clearly old cars that are owned for their classic charm. Nobody, but nobody, thinks you bought your 356 because you couldn't afford a new model.

I note that is true of all the cars viewed favorably in the list above.

This simple fact was made evident to me about 2 years ago. I was driving my '77 911. I scored a desirable parking spot that some guy in a truck also coveted. Before driving off, he informed me that I wasn't fooling anyone with my old 911. He speculated that it was a '75.

Until that moment, it had honestly not occured to me that people thought I was trying to pass my car off as a newer, more expensive model (it looks bone stock). Or that people assumed I drove it because I couldn't afford a newer 911.

obviously whoever wrote that article is either trying to or has failed miserably at coercing women into his car. if you need to use your car in order to get or impress a woman than as jack said, you are going to be driving alone for a while to come. just from personal experience and for kicks i always use the family beater on the first few dates then if things go well i pull out the jetta, haha. to this day no woman other than my mother has ridden in the Pcar and you know what, who cares. i always thought a 550 would be a *****in date car, haha, if you can find one and then pay for it. jack i agree, it is a means in most respects as a way to take a break from women. i say kiss my foot to any woman who is impressed by what a man drives.
ok, im out

IMHO, women prefer a convertible or targa more than performance. My daughter is a college cheerleader. When I went by to pick her up one day in my taga with the top off.....I had wall-to-wall women begging me to give them a ride. The daughter came out and said...."how gross...that's my dad" and scared them all away!

It sounds like they assembled some pretty mean, ball-busting biatches for that tour, but still there is some legitimacy to it. Also there is a very obvious and specific British tone, biatches are everywhere but those were British biatches.

I can definitely imagine someone looking down on the driver of an old 911, the whole "can't even afford a proper mid-life crisis" thing, but then who cares what strangers think of you??

I got paid last weekend to bring my 911 by a fashion shoot, my friend was the photographer and wanted to use the car for a prop. She didn't wind up using it, I got paid anyways and told her that she had "hurt my car's feelings". The assembled young female talent, models and stylists, etc., replied that my car was "hot". This cheered me a little, but it was intersting to hear what they really thought in an unguarded moment. And they were young and hot beyond, well, suffice it to say that they were "A" models.

I thought of my Pelican brethren but forgot my camera, it was Sat. AM, I was half asleep and I had been under the impression that she was shooting guys. Oh well.

I really got to tell you, I give a rats behind what women think of any car that I drive. I have my cars for MYSELF. Just the machine and me.

I started dating my wife when all the wheels I owned was a 20 year old beat up bicycle. There is no doubt that she was after me, not my ride

Guys, don't sweat it too much. I've got a copy of the magazine and....to be honest.....I'd far sooner give garage room to the 73 Carrera RS than house room to any of the swamp donkeys who featured in the article.

My wife's a babe. She loves my 73S. Works for me every time.

Interesting point... although, I've found that the vast majority of people have no idea about how old any particular 911 is. A case in point is my 1977 Targa... when I bought it last year, I fully expected most people to know that it was an older Porsche. However, I don't know if it's the colour, the wheels or whatever (it's in quite reasonable shape)... but most people think the car is 10-15 years newer (much to my surprise).

The guy who guessed your car to be a 75 clearly knew a thing or two about 911 history. Most people don't have a clue.

I don't want to get caught into the predicament of sneering the female gender by associating them with lower species of any kind, as this would be both untrue, unfair and, to be perfectly honest, contrary to my appreciation of the kind of women I care for. (I am not stating herewith that I care for that many of them, nor that I have especially good relations with women, but then that is my concern...).
But I have no problem whatsoever in getting caught in the act of utterly rejecting, with profound and heartfelt disgust, the tenor of those so-called "life-style" magazines or other media and/or people, who build their fame and make their money by ramming the "correct" purported to be "mandatory" life-style, politics, behavior, whatever, down people's throats. The old "sixties" critique against "consumerism" appears to have been countered by a full blast inflated solid state bull**** bubble of crap of humongous proportions...splatter!
Any one incapable of appreciating the (perhaps "hidden") qualities of an RS is in fact just not into cars... it appears to me to be a fact that the majority of women do not care about cars, and to put to them the question about associating cars and men is much akin to asking about some one's associations of wine, where everybody knows Champagne is for lovers, weddings or brothels. And, most good men do not have a car to speak of.
