SMOG question in Colorado
Hey guys,
Does anyone know what the smog laws are in Colorado Springs/Denver area for older 911s? (74/75) Peace! |

Older 911s have to pass an annual smog test for the limits applicable for their year of manufacture. This includes tailpipe emissions and visual test for all required smog equipment.
If you elect to get collector plates, they renew every 5 years and you need to only pass the smog test one time and then are exempt for as long as you own the car.

Ditto Hetmann. They'll do a visual inspection to look for a smog pump & cat, and sniffer you on the dyno. It's a gray area though in that time period. Often HE's are confused for a cat and since a P-car engine looks like on-other, sometimes the smog pump can be overlooked as well.

I agree.
Just don’t show up with pulleys that don’t have belts on them or brackets with nothing attached. The standards for older 911s are very low but some of the important tricks are: Make sure the gas cap is right. Tune up – make sure everything works as it should. New plugs, ignition and fuel just right. Several oil changes – gas in the oil will fail you. Fresh gas – fuel left over from last summer won’t hack it. Soon the gas stations will change from “winter” fuel to “summer” fuel. Summer fuel is slightly easier to pass. If you need, some local fuel suppliers have 100+ octane unleaded and race fuel to above 114 octane. Just drive up to the pump and fill ‘er up at $4/gal. Take it on the highway – a run to Pueblo or Fort Collins will do wonders for the emissions (and the car.) Test just after a DE event is best or just go out to Second Creek and run laps – double benefit. Show up at the test in the morning with the engine just warmed up and some full throttle. Not hot or in the afternoon on a hot day. Some have emissions engines they swap into their car. Of course We never had “loaner” emissions engines. Best, Grady gradyclay@hotmail.com

Thanks for the info. I thought my car only had thermo-reactors and no smog pump until the later years? Can anyone verify that? Thanks...

The mistaken HE's for "dual" cats is common and allows some of us Colorado guys to get away with test pipes...

Hey good timing on this post. I'm getting ready to do the smog test in a few months. Would any of you in Colorado Springs happen to know of a shop that might mistake my SSI's for catalytic converters? I figured I'd have to try a few before I found a place where they were clueless. I know this question isn't very politically correct, so I'll apologize now.

Jeff,
Call Concours Cars here in the springs. They use a shop off of 31st that does a great job, and has no problem with the "dual" cats... I can't think of the shop name off hand.
