Excluding water cooled 911's, what car drives the most like an air-cooled 911?
Crazy as it sounds, I drove a BMW M Roadster about five years ago, and the handling reminded me of an early 911 .

My '99 WRX did the lift throttle oversteer thing the other day and certainly caught me by surprise. Doesn't have enough power to do power on oversteer. Yet.

My buddy's super beetle with 2400cc motor is the car that drives most like my 911. A BMW 2002 also feels pretty nimble and has the same "smell" of an old air-cooled 911. Subaru's IMHO don't drive like any 911, they feel like a heavier and bulkier Acura Integra. My buddy's roommate has a WRX with all the suspension goodies and nice tires and it still feels like you're hustling a boat (not to mention the quality is on par with Costco toilet paper)

I always thought the '87 era M5s had a touch of 911ness to how they felt

When I lived abroad a friend had a R5-GT turbo... that was a cool car. With the engine in the back it felt similar the way the front bobs up'n'down and how it squats when on boost

I drove a (new) Mini Cooper S last fall and I was surprised at how nimble it was. Very 911ish in that respect.

i drove it too , and i agree, it's nimble, but feels to much like a toy car for my liking... didn't feel like i would ever respect it as a car. the girly interior is a completely different story.. fugly and annoying layout

Turbo Corvair by Chevy.
Air cooled flat six with a turbo and Horizontal fan Engine hanging out the back end like a 911, as Ralph Nader will have you believe UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED. |

105 series alfas.
All the weight is in the front but they have a squirelly rear and you do not lift off in left hand bends, especially in the wet. Super precise handling with iffy roadholding. Different characteristics to a 911 but it's the only other car I know that feels as alive as 911 and driving one always brings a smile to my face.
