Re: Thinking about selling, value help please
Here are my comments and a price guess in the end. I have marked the positive and negatives with up to three +++ and --- and the "doesn't matter" as =
Big plus is mileage and original paint (assuming it is very nice). Also the interior. The Carrera tensioners are almost self understood, even more so is the pop off, a $18 part. A lot of the mods you list are not going to increase the value of the car, no matter what you spent on them. They may even distract a bit, since folks may think that you "raced" it. Autocross counts too. This looks to be a great car, and you will want to shoot for top dollar = all original car buyers. I recommend that you actually take some of the mods off. For example the strut bar and the borla muffler. Even the braided brake lines and "race" pads. A big minus for the purist will be rolled fenders, by the way. And those are not easily brought back. The BBS are not as nice as fuchs and everyone knows that nice fuchs are a grand more than BBS. If you have fuchs, put them on! The fact that you have practically seamless maintenance records is great. You shoud put it all together in a nice binder to make it presentable. Also, if those records can prove mileage, it will help a lot. Do a carfax and make sure it also shows consistent mileage. You may mention all the money you spent, but that's something that you do if you maintain a car. It does not mean that you will recover any of that. ![]() That all said, I would think 15k is doable, easily, even in the SF bay. I have seen a similar car sold for 16.5 a couple years back. I bought the SSI exhaust off of it. Yes, that seller did well in bringing it back to bone stock to make it attractive to the "purist" buyer. I would even think that selling this via consignment with a good toy car specialist may bring top dollar. I never dealt with any of them and don't know how much their share is, but this car certainly would be up their alley. Hope this helps? George +++ 90,000 miles = Sunroof +++ All original paint ++ Original tan leather interior = Factory Whale tail -- BBS Wheels, Toyo Proxes RA-1 tires Upgrades: + Carrera tensioners + Pop-off Valve + Turbo Tie Rods = (these are stock on 83) Turbo lower valve covers = (you mean muffler) Borla exhaust = Cat bypass = Front strut brace + Euro ride height -- Rolled fenders front and rear = Sony Cd Player = Boston Pro speakers = Drilled rotors = Pagid brake pads = Stainless steel brake lines Recent Work: (last 100 miles) ++ Power Sachs clutch installed = Rear main seal replaced = Transmission seal replaced = Oil/filter change = Adjusted front wheel bearings + New engine sound pad --- I am the 4th owner, ++ I have records back to almost new. + All 3 previous owners lived in the same neighborhood. = I have spared no expense taking care of this car. = I have spend almost 10,000 in upgrades and maintenance on this car. |

Let me post again. I think if you are patient, the paint and interior are real nice and you can verify mileage, you should start out asking 18k. Be patient and offer it in the PCA mags and other places where the "purists" may shop.

George, thank you for all your input. I agree with your comments completely. I was debating on adding what i spent, you are right that it really has no bearing. I will take that part out.
I have the ability to be patient, as this has been a hard decision to come to. Living in San Francisco and driving in the city is tough with a car like this. I never planned on selling, but just wish I had more time to take advantage of having the car. I much appreciate your comments.

I could put on 7&9 Fuchs full polish. I was planning on selling separately thinking that I could get more that way.... Maybe I should put them on instead if it would help?

Hi Jeff:
Too bad the fuchs are full polish! They will detract from the "all original" look. Why don't you sell your polished fuchs to someone that can throw in a set of decent 6 and 7 fuchs takeoffs as part of the deal? Then put the 6 and 7 fuchs on your car and sell the BBS seperately. $1600 (?) value on 7 and 9 - $600 you have to credit for decent 6 and 7s + $600 value BBS You come out ahead $1600 in cash plus an unspecified increased value of the car. It may all be a big hassle, especially if you have to swap tires around. It may however make financial sense, depending on how much more people like the car with fuchs over BBS. ![]() George |

Hey, by the way, how much for the 7 and 9s?

I suppose I could refinish the 9's if I was really into it, I have a set of 951 8's that would go on the front, anodized lip, black center...
Jeff Now that it is getting later my thinking is going...

I'd love to see you get that much ($18k or more), but I see earlier 3.2 Carreras going for lower than $18k or $19k. I guess $14k is what you are offered. Doesn't hurt to shoot for more. Sorry, just trying to offer another opinion. Looks like a very nice car, by the way! I'm glad, too that you didn't use the term 10k "invested". I think using that word is laughable. These are not investments. OR if they are, they are incredibly poor ones. Maybe a rare speedster or old Porsche race car which is stored in a climate controlled environment is an investment. Not a nice old SC or Carrera or 993 or whatever.
Good luck, Doug

I disagree. And I am usually the one that estimates value on the low side. I think you have to keep in mind that this car is in the "survivoir" category. If you have orignal paint, original interior and less than 100k miles, you are in a different category, where a premium is paid. Only problem is that you may have to wait for the right "picky" buyer. If you show me a 3.2 Carrera Coupe in a great color like guards red, with original paint, original interior and less than 100k miles for under 18k, I will buy it immediately! George |

1987 911 Carrera 76Kmi, $16,500
George, I think you need to buy the above car '87 with G50 for 16.5k -- except that it does have a restored interior.... And guys-- not everyone in San Francisco is rich. Objectively I earn a decent wage as a Database Administrator, but 75% of my income goes toward my mortgage as the houses here are way out of line with people's incomes. And the truly rich people are buying 997's and Caymen's, not SC's-although I will let them speak for themselves. For me, I always want to get a deal - and my benchmark for a great deal (for a driver, good /solid condition- running well, no urgent paint issues, and about 80% original-- aftermarket wheels, exhausts OK), up to 150k.. 15-17k 87-90 Carrrera Coupe 12-14k 84-86 3.2 Carrera 9-11k 78-83 SC 0-8k beater 911--ie major engine or paintwork, urgent Your car looks in really nice condition, and it is a coupe, so I would say 12k would be a good deal for a buyer so start at 13k (14,999k Max). It may also be worth waiting a little until all of the January "need cash" buyers stop flooding the market with their cars and the weather is more reliably better.... Just my two cents...

Sorry dude, with those benchmarks, you better be patient! ![]() There are a lot of rich people in SF. They are just not 30 years old with a new house and a young family. They are folks that have come here 30 years ago. That FL carrera is priced low, all right. But it also has had engine work, has a trans that makes noises and a wiper switch that's broken. ![]() In any case, I'll be interested to follow Jeff's sale and see how it will go. Keep us updated Jeff! George |

I agree those are tough criteria and I will say that i have looked around for the last 2 years--and not yet found a car that meets them. All the best to Jeff --and hey if I get a major raise or new job or something I will want to come and see your car...Marvin

You must not be looking hard and serious, are you? Because it is possible to find deals if you are looking hard. My buddy bought an 84 carrera that was significantly under your benchmark price. He was on top of the entire area's market for a couple months though (that's work!) and pulled the trigger immediately when that steal of a car cropped up. Those deals come up, but you better be quick and not be set on a certain color or other minor things. Cheers, George |
