Shift coupler reattachment
Hey guys, quick question... Finishing up the reinstall of my motor and tranny finally and was hoping someone might have a little gouge for reconnecting the coupler to the transmission. I wasn't smart enough to leave myself any marks on the rods to cheat by. Also, should it be reconnected while in a particular gear using either the shift lever itself or the transmission rod?
Thanks, Brian

Nope, no tricks other than marking it (too little, too late). I used 1st gear, just for the sake of consistancy. It's easiest if you have the passenger seat out because it might take a few tries. I think I had to drive around the block several times to make sure. It's amazing how it can be "so close" but not perfect. You'll think it will be ok when it's in your driveway, but then you drive and... what no 3rd? Then it's back to the driveway.

Oh boy, I'm really glad I didn't mark it! Live and learn I guess. Thanks Chili!

if it is a 915, there is a trick, pull the shifter over towards the drivers door in neutral, the twist the shift rod coming out of the trani all the way towards the passanger side while also in neutral and tighten.
your done. if you look at the shift rod coming from the shifter as you pull it torwads the drivers door, you can see inside the "hole" it is actually rotating the opposite way, so what you are doing is moving the shifter all the way towards first and second slot while in neutral, and then moving the trani to the same position and tightening. That's actually what I was hoping to hear! Subject to a little fine tuning, I knew there had to be something. Thanks, Jim.

There was a procedure in the 101 project book:
1. Put the gear lever in the upper left (1st gear position) 2. Put the tranny in the first gear 3. mate the two with the coupler done.

Connect it and Play With It a Little
Not too complicated once you connect it and figure out where your gears are and how the linkage moves around. I replaced the bushings in my linkage and marked the spline. Ended up ignoring it and playing around with it until I got it the way I wanted it.

Hi Brian, Jim is correct, rotate the shaft from the tranny to the passanger side, then move the shifter in the neutral positionto the drivers side, & tighten coupler. Tip, work from the passenger side with drivers door closed. bunge cord the shifter to the door. that way you have 2 hands free to tighten the coupler bolt. the other thing to watch for is the fore-aft position of the coupler. you will be doing trial & error to get it right. Good luck, Craig

Thank you all for the help. Craig, I appreciate the extra tip and hope you're doing well. I keep having to play hookey from work just to get the littlest of things done on this car. Seems when I am home, 7 month pregnant momma keeps finding other things for me to be doing!
Thanks again to everybody!
