Question 3.6 cooler into an SC

Is it possible, and if so, can one remove the stock oil T-bone SC cooler and install a 3.6 964 oil cooler?

Thanks in advance

The 964 and 993 coolers get a lot of praise, because they cool big motors without the help of an engine-mounted cooler. But I don't know that they are more efficient, per se -- so much as the aerodynamic improvements in the front ends of the 964 and 993 made any cooler placed there get a lot more airflow.

The square shape of the later coolers is harder to fit in pre-1989 fenders. I've heard of it being fit in there, but I think it has to be set at an angle, which probably makes the aerodynamic shortcomings of the earlier front ends even worse.

Pelican sells an aftermarket Carrera-style cooler, and Elephant/Pelican sells a widemouth model of the Carrera-style cooler with flow characteristics which are closer to the actual stock Carrera cooler, which is a pretty great oil cooler.

A fender-mounted cooler with good air-flow accomodations is that best solution.

It can be done, but not easily. Then you need to make up custom hoses to connect it to the hard lines.

Also if you compare the area of the 964 cooler with the Carerra cooler, there really isn't that much difference - maybe 15%. The Carerra cooler is narrower, but it is taller. Jack's comments about airflow are right on and that is the reason the cooler works in the 964. Not true in an SC.

Then to fit the 964 cooler you need to custom fab mounts and a stone guard and find some means to seal it to the inner fender.

IMHO, Not worth the bother. Use a Carerra style cooler and the all the factory supporting parts. Super clean, super easy, slam dunk!

I have a 993TT cooler in the front fender and it works absolutely beautiful, even when it's 90-100 degrees out here in Calabasas, the car still runs at 180-190 degrees, I love it!

Axe, it looks like you have the C2 bodywork to match.

I put one in a 78 SC that I did a 3.6 conversion on. We only did it because we already had the whole car and the fellow didn't want to spend the money on a Carrera cooler since he had a 964 cooler. It was a pain to get it to fit, as Jack said it has to go in on an angle even then we had to 'massage' inner fender to get it to fit. Making up brackets was a pain. I wouldn't do it again, makes more sense to go with a fender cooler that will fit or a front mount cooler.

Hey Chuck,

You can put one in a Carrera as well, there's plenty of room to mount it properly.

Sounds like installing a 3.6 cooler into a SC is a PITA. I dont know if this is post hijack but what about this idea.

Mounting the SC style trumbone oil coolers on both sides of an SC. One in each fender. Has this been done?

I guess it would add alot of weight...feedback?

The shape of the 964/993 cooler is wrong for a SC/Carrera wheel well as you can see in this pic

A cooler in both fenders can and has been done, but that does not adress the main issue, which is air flow. The best solution for the least trouble is a center mount. A surprisingly small cooler can be effectively used here because of the large flow of clean air. Use a center mount in conjunction w/ a stock fender mount where traffic is an issue(the center mount relies on the cars motion for flow)

Use the Carrera cooler along with Elephant Racing finned oil lines and you will be far better off.

Bill,

I have done a few installs of this cooler on a Carrera and it works beautifully. It looks just like it was factory. There's room for the cooler and the horns, no problem.

Cheers!

Yaaaaahh... I'd love to see some more of that "bodywork" that was on Axeman's 911 too!
