Final Smog Test Question
I'm taking my car in for it's final smog test tomorrow & it smells like it's running a bit rich. I was going to stop just before I get to the test station & turn in (clockwise) the mixture screw just before I test, & then unscew it when I'm done. I have the tee handle hex I bought from the host. My question is anyone know a ballpark guess (1-10 turns) on how much to turn it & what should I listen for? Will I need to bump up the idle to do this? Or is this a bad idea? It is a temporary thing till I get it to the mechanic next week to install SSIs.

Try 1/4 to 1/2 turn, if that. I missed the other thread but you should really dial it in w/ a Gastester CO meter. I'm sure one of the WA guys has one you could borrow.

Right-Rich; Left-Lean. Very small adjustments make a big difference… ie ¼ turn. It should feel like its ‘indexed’ as you turn.
You might not have much luck w/ the T-handle wrench. Most people say they're too long. I use a craftsman allen wrench. |

yup, CCW is leaner. i also used my long handle craftsman. the t handle gets in the way of the boot and stuff. good luck with the smog bastards!

Paul, it's going to be tough to tune it to smog specs by smell/ear. The CIS distributor can be finiky and I've heard of an unknowing kid hydro-locking an engine from "just a couple turns".
Some things that may help are an oil change, good gas (Chevron), and runing it at higher RPM across country on flat ground to burn off carbon flakes and clear up the cat and O2. See if they will "pretest" it to make sure everythings good before and keep the engine hot.

Get it right before the test and you can change it after the test.
I use to do the same thing with my Lotuses, except that I would retard the timing when I went to the testing facility and readvance it after the test was completed. Two out of five times it would pass. The other three time the inspector that I had to see after failing the test will look at the Lotus and just give me an exemption. They are just looking for gross polluter. The fact that the Lotus is an exotic car and very few on the street, let them give me a exemption. Plus the story that if I needed the carb to be rebuilt I would have to order parts from England. |

A Weissach is an 80 right? Use a dwell meter on the test leads, tweak the mixture until the duty cycle is averaging 50%.
Should be pretty close. Tom |
