Broken Windshield Replacement Story
So I'm cruising on the I-15 here in Utah, with 70 degrees, blue skies, and the top off my 87 Targa, in the best of moods as my flat-6 is purring; only to be jolted from my euphoric state by a loud bang and an immediate half-moon about 2" in diameter on my windshield, right in front of my main view area. I immediately remembered some of the horror stories told here on the board regarding windshield replacement; its expense, the hassle of finding one with an imbedded antenna, etc. Anyhow, decided to call my auto glass dealer who did a great job on my motorhome windshields, and he said if the crack can be covered by a dollar bill, it can probably be fixed.
Upon arriving to his shop 20 minutes later, he told me that the crack was caused by a soundwave because of a side impact and not a direct hit from which the crack began, and that the windshield would have to be replaced. Amazingly, his supplier, who was down the street, actually had the right windshield with antenna in stock. 2 hours later, I was out the door with a brand new windshield, radio working great. While I had a $100 deductable, the total replacement price was $430, from which the insurance co. gets a hefty discount. Nice to know I can actually get SOMETHING replaced on my beloved Porsche at a competitive price and conveniently, without having to wait for the part to come in .
