To short shift or not to short shift?

Okay, I think I've read every thread on this and I cannot decide. I have a recently rebuilt 915 that shifts fine with the stock shifter. I would like to reduce the throw but have read the negatives about a short shift kit. Anyone else have 915 in good shape that they installed the factory short shift kit into? Or should I just save up the $ to get a Wevo shifter?

I just got a $100 gift cert. to this site and 10% off coupon that expires 3/31 and they are burning a hole in my pocket.

I think as long as you understand how Porsche synchros work, and don't speed shift, but pause right when the brake band contacts the synchro sleeve, before pulling it all the way into gear, you should be fine.

I have installed a factory short shift kit and I like it. Works like all other OEM Porsche parts. Gives shorter and more precise shift.

Short shift is a very personal choice some love it some don't. Steve's advise is good, you need some mechanical empathy to feel your way through a shift, a 915 cannot be hurried s/s or no.

Taller drivers will appreciate the reduced travel up into 3rd

If you do get a s/s get the factory one, you will be buying a piece of the fabled 911SC/RS for which it was developed.

Good timing. I drove on of the local Pelican's SC tongiht, and it made it really clear how much I like the factory short shift. I couldn't beleive how long the throws were on a stock SC/early Carrera shifter! Works especially good couopled with a Seine Systems gated shift kit. Like stated before, if you go s/s, don't think you can rush the 915 - you can't.

I vote for the Wevo, I just installed one & all though I have to fine tune it, I can already feel a big difference along with thier shift coupler.

I installed the factory SS about 5 months ago. I knew I liked it as soon as I put it in, and I still like it today. I agree with what Steve says above, but even though shifting must be careful, it is more enjoyable.

When I purchased my 1979 911SC, it had a Weltmeister short shift kit installed. Soon afterwards I started having major tranny problems. I took the car to a well-recommended and respected independant Porsche repair shop in the S.F. Bay Area. They found worn syncros, and chipped gears and worn gears. After the repairs $$$$, they told me that the Weltmeister shortens the shift by changing leverage points which they feel creates undo stress on the tranny.

They recommended the factory short-shift kit which shortens the throw but not as much as the Weltmeister kit. The factory kit is less-expensive and was designed by Porsche for their transmissions. I installed the factory kit and have had no problems with their kit. The tranny shifts smooth as butter and down-shifts perfectly.
