B&B vs GHL Muffler Noise

I have a 1976 911S, 2.7L CIS. I have backdated the exhaust system to a 1974 style. I have also installed a B&B two inlet, one 3" outlet sport muffler. I like the perfomance of the muffler but now that I have two young children, one 2 years old and one 10 days old, it is too loud to start the car in the garage without waking up the whole house.

I am thinking of replacing the B&B muffler with a GHL. Can anyone tell me if they are happy with the performance of the GHL and how loud are they in comparison to the B&B.

At one point I bought a Bursch in an attempt to quiet things down cheaply and I hated it. It sounded like the car was leaking or spitting and I put the B&B back within one week.

If anyone has had good luck with another make of stainless steel sport muffler (Dansk, Manta) please let me know. I am leaning towards the GHL, because I have heard good things about the performance, but I am still curious about the noise factor.

I have a GHL 1 in one out, & it is loud. I had a 1 in 2 out & it was very loud, I am using a GHL cat bypass pipe also, & that adds to the noise too. I do like the sound of the 1 in & 1 out though. I can only guess that the 2 in 1out would be close to my 1 in 1 out with a cat bypass. I have heard that the Dansk is not as loud. That said, GHL has great customer service,will work with you until you are satisfied & you can order through our host! good luck Craig

I have tried both on a 78 SC.
The B&B was so loud (plus it sounded plain bad) I took it off after 4 weeks and sold it.
I had GHL make me a nice muffler with extra sound proofing material. They will custom make mufflers for customers based on sound needs.
The GHL is a a far superior unit and sounds really nice.

Let you know, just ordered complete header & mufler setup. After a ton of research my opinion is performance upgrade is about the same as the rest but the sound produced is unmatched and also not to unruly. Also darn expensive! GHL does have a top knotch rep for taking care of customers.

I'm not sure if there's much you can do about not waking up a newborn if you install any aftermarket exhaust. I guess you'll just have to drive the car when the baby's awake.

I'll let you decide if this Dansk is too loud. I've learned to feather the throttle coming into my subdivision, but cranking it up will always get your attention.

With outlets reduced down to 2 1/4 inches, my B&B is surprisingly quiet, and free of the annoying resonance the B&B muffler is famous for.

However, the build quality on my B&B was terrible. I've had to take it in twice now to get the seams and junction pounts re-welded. In this picture, you can see some of the surface crap from where a crack spread into the flat part of the stainless.

On this car I had 3 mufflers on the SSIs-

-Dansk stainless single out, stock look, fairly quiet but bad fit, cut and re-weld to fit through the rear valence correctly

-B&B dual out, sexy aggressive sound but too damn loud and an annoying resonance

-Monty 3" single out, deep throaty rumble, not too loud, no resonance...just right!

I sometimes wonder why nobody suggests FabSpeeds muffler. They have video files with good sound to decide if you like the sound or not, etc. I always thought they sounded pretty good and not overly loud when not on it...

How come Fabspeed is never suggested?

I believe Fabspeed uses Flowmasters. The Flowmaster is not quiet, but it is a bargain.

Mudman: FYI: I am currently pushing the car out of the garage and rolling down the driveway. This is the only way that I can stay in good graces with the wife.

Jack Olsen: What do you think about reducing the outlet size of the B&B that I have on my car. The B&B tailpipe is connected with a compression strap and can be easliy removed. I work as an engineer and I do a lot of work with pipefitters and sheetmetal workers. I wonder if I should try to fabricate a new outlet pipe (smaller in size). My next question is what will happen from a performance standpoint. Obviously I will create more back-pressure, but I do not think the performance will be hindered that much.

My car dyno sheets show a significant improvement with the B&B headers and muffler, even with the outlets reduced. Exhaust tuning is a voodoo art, and if you go to non-stock cams the equal-length and tuning effects will be clearer. But with my stock 964 motor, the real improvement seems to come from the wider diameter headers. By the time the exhaust gasses have been tossed into the muffler, they're already cooling quite a bit. I don't think a slightly smaller set of outlets made any difference at all, that far down the line.

Is there even a hp difference between the B&B dual-outs and single-outs? I doubt it. I believe B&B puts those massive outlets on their mufflers to 'look big' and 'sound loud' to otherwise-uninformed buyers.

You might try rigging the manual throttle cable so it operates an exhaust cutout. That would give you the best of both worlds.

We have GHL dual out with an extra baffle to help reduce some of the noise...but it is still loud. It grew on me though and does not bug me any more...but I am aware of not trying to bug my neighbors in the mornings. They have joked with us that they know we are coming from a block away...

I think that's exactly what's happening. I have very small outlets (2 1/4") No increase in backpressure at all from the tips. The narrow tips do help "tune" the exhaust note however.
