Analyzing dyno results

I'm relatively new to the BB (first post

I need some advice / comments.

I visited the local dyno here in Barcelona to see how my motor is doing. I got the chart and it looked nice until I realized that I have no idea how to analyze it since I have no point of comparison.

At first I was a little disappointed on the power (216HP) but the guy working at the Dyno said that it was the highest result on any 3.2 Carrera he's ever tested. Mine's 1987 model w/ G50 with the only upgrade being KN air filter in the stock box.

(I had to touch up the chart a little to make it readable)

I have a long shopping list of upgrades I want to add (like everyone else

) but I'd like to know before that if there's something basic I need fix to get the car into original specs or can the power loss be contributed to the 110K miles and differences in the Dynos.

So guys, how's my baby doing?

I take it that means 216HP at the wheels??

THat is huge for a 3.2. You should get a second opinion.

It's the corrected value at the flywheel.
(I wish it was on the wheels but no such luck : )

I forgot to mention on the post that it's a Euro spec Carrera (i.e. 231HP at the flywheel when it left the factory).

OK - that makes sense. Still not bad when you consider our cars are heading towards the big 20. With that sort of mileage, compression ratios, vacuum leaks and a meriad of other potential performance sapping gremlins are normal.

What are your plans on extracting more HP?

To be honest every time I drive the car I can't be but amazed how well it wears its years. So considering the age I guess the HP is all right.

I've considered the SSIs and a MAF (with a chip) to increase the HP but while I'm gathering budget I'll try to learn how to take more out of the power I already have ( i.e. learn to drive the thing

)

When the time is right (and I'll be rich) I wouldn't mind a 993 engine.

I'm planning also to put the RUF YB bumpers later on. The previous owner painted the car somewhere along the line with Gulf blue so to my eye it looks a bit incomplete without any other mods.

The thing w/ dynos is they all measure the same thing differently on different days. The operators comments(unlees he was just trying to sell something) put it into proper perspective. A given dyno run is really only validly compared to another run on the same machine under the same conditions by the same operator using the same methods.

If the operator thought that the engine was strong in comparison to others run by him on the same dyno, then it probably was.

You now have a baseline to judge further mods.

What you've said has pretty much confirmed what I thought before.
What I would like to know is how do the curves look on the mid section?
i.e How does the power and torque evolve with the rev's and how does my car compare with the std values?

In what order would you go adding on improvements? And what do you think are the best improvements per dollar paid?

(I know there's a million threads on improvements but most of them seem to be the "if i had $10 000 I'd do..." -type of threads)

I had to print out the curves to compare them with mine.
According to this I'm doing just fine. I noticed that my torque was quite a bit higher than in the Dyno report you posted. Any idea why?
I'm assuming my car is stock but then again I'm not sure since I have never had the motor open (and I've only owned this car for 6 months).

I've been hankering after one of your chips but I though I ought to put in SSIs before I do that. But now that I have your attention, I have another question.

I was just reading a thread on chips where you mentioned that the Euro cars were programmed for 95 ron gas, but on my gas lid it says 98 ron only and the sticker looks original, could that be?

I don't know why the absolute total of the torque values are so different, but they shouldn't be. The only difference between the two cars is that yours is a supposed to be a 231 hp Euro with higher compression, and the other is a U.S. 217 hp car. Since hp is a function of torque, (hp=torquex5252), or Metric HP (PS) = KWx1.3596, perhaps try to compare the hp curves. AFIK, when the supply of 98 RON octane in Europe became scarce to nonexistent in many parts of Europe, and only 95 RON octane fuel or lower was available, Porsche conceeded and admitted that their Euro spec cars were fine to run on 95 RON. Shell Optimax is one of the few 98 octane fuels that is manufactured, and it is not available in many regions.
