Speed "o" Stop Working

Got in my 88* 911 & I noticed that the speedo was not working. The miles stop counting as well.

Where should I start looking first, second, third.....

thanks

Bello

Could also be the sensor.

If you were doing any work around the fuse box recently, check to make sure your getting 12V to the power lead (black wire). Mine stopped working and I took it to a local place to be checked. The speedo was fine. I traced the problem to a loose connection at the fuse. Realigned the wire, tightened the screw and no problem since.

If the speedo and odo stopped then it is not the plastic gear inside the speedo since that only applies to the odo. If both stopped then I would check connections, fuses, power (the speedo is electric, the odo runs off of the speedo). It could be the sensor, but more than likely not since the most common malady for the sensor seems to be loosing a magnet which just causes the thing to run slow.

Have you done any work anywhere on the car recently??

Is the speedo to the 88 driven by a cable? Undo the cable housing and pull on the inside cable. If it pulls out of the housing, its done broke. Mine broke about 2 hours after I turned the guage too far CCW and put a kink in the cable.

no cable in '88, it's electric, sender with 8 magnets in the tranny.

I had same proublem with my 86. The insulation on the wires was cut open conected to the sensor. It looked like the PO tryed to fix with electrical tape.

My 73's speedometer stopped working the other day so I crawled under and checked the cable at the transmission end, no problem there. Pulled out the speedo, no problem at that end.
Then I remembered the best fix for old speedometers that stop working... ring finger knuckle, tap once on the bezel right about the 100mph mark, works fine now. Shoulda started with that in the first place....
