Door Stop Repairs

Greetings...

The door stop on my '73 S is starting to wear, along with the surrounding metal. I'm thinking of installing one of the reinforcement plates that Pelican has available as a preventive measure. It looks pretty straight-forward, but in the item description Peilcan advises to have it professionally installed.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I assume that the plate mounts on the inside of the door? It looks like a nice fix and I'm not sure what the complications are that cause Pelican to recommend that it be done professionally.

Thanks for your help,
John Audette
Bend, Oregon

P.S. This is my first post to this forum. By way of introduction, I have been messing around with 356's for many years and now my attention is more focused on early 911's. I currently have a '60 Super 90 356B Roadster, a '73 911S (built to 2.7), and a '98 C2S Coupe.

Welcome to the board.

Replacement is easy and you can do it. Took me about 1 hour for each door. The 2 plates of the kit actually sandwich the door panel and prevents tearing. Just follow the book and remember to tie that string to the outer plate.

A couple of notes, if the metal is torn then straighten out as much as you can before you put on the reinforcement plates.
When you first try to put the thick metal reinforcement plate into position on the door jamb through the small hole it seems like there is no way that it's going to fit through the hole. Keep working it and I ended up just pushing the plate upwards first and it worked.

I ordered the kit and also had to order the new stays because the original ones on my SC didn't match up with the new screws.

Good luck. And nice lineup of cars by the way!

I'm also looking the same advice. I'm rebuilding a 71. Has no stop on drivers door and have the new stop from our host. Looks like the metal around the hole has been distorted and I think I should install the re-enforcing plate.

In addition to installing the door stay reinforcement, I also modified the door stop detent to have a softer action, so that opening the door past the first detent doesn't stress the sheet metal so much.

John is right. You'll want to file or grind down the 'fat' portions on the arm of the door stop. I filed mine down to what I thought was enough and found the mounting bolts on the door side had worked loose after about a year. Got the dremel out and ground down some more. The door swings open much easier and does not put as much stress on the repaired area.

It's an easy DIY unless the inner door tabs are broken, then its time to get a welder thats double jointed and has teeny hands.

The aforementioned 'grinding down' to the door stop arm would apply if you had purchased a brand new door stop. The older door stop is a different style if I recall.

John,

I'm just over the hill from you in Cottage Grove. Welcome to the board. It is a storehouse of Porsche knowledge. The board and its members have been indispensable in my recent restoration.

Are you part of the PCA? Maybe I'll see you on a drive...
