Assorted Starting Issues
I am finally getting my car on the road after running circles with the DMV and I am now working on all the fine tuning. The first among them is a starting issue. I turn the key and it clicks and then stops then I cant get any power to anything. I take the positive connector off the battery and put it back on and turn the key again. After doing this a few times, about three, the car will start and it fires up and works perfectly. Any ideas about how to work this out?
David

I thought I almost lost myself...in the DMV maze. Anyway I am ready to drive...almost...between the fuel leak and this starting issue and my leaky sun roof and the drivers side door that doesnt work and the oil pressure thats kind of wierd...well you get the picture. Thats why its a project car. Anyway I will check the starter first thing. Any other suggestions/experiences would be appreciated.

what is up with the drivers door? i just fixed mine, and i got pretty intimate with the innards. what is it doing? really pretty easy. you have a 2.7, your oil pressure will be wierd. does the green light come on? if not, eff it. DMV, you are on your own with those crazy bastards!

Living a life of intermittent starting problems here's my top X list of things to check in order of importance:
[1] I'd check/charge the battery. A slightly weak (but kinda working) battery will cause more electrical amusements, false leads and head aches than anything else. Trust me, I know this in my heart. [2] Detach your battery connections and scrub everything with either wire brushes, screwdriver tips, etc. both the posts, and the insides of the connectors. You want a nice clean de-oxidized lead to lead contact. Re-connect and tighten. [3] Wiggle, clean, etc. all relevant fuses and fuse holders. I sincerely wish you the best of luck. Lomotpk

ignition switches do get worn.
I'd probably start by cleaning the 14pin connector.. and see if you have a yellow wire connector in the luggage comp. under the dash, which may be dirty. A voltage drop test at the starter sol may give you some idea of what's happening. A starter solenoid jump with a screwdriver to the big starter feed wil confirm a poor solenoid feed.

My door problem is that the driver side door is hard to open. The action is just hard when the door is closed. I can live with that but I can lock the door with my key but I cannot unlock it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The oil pressure is hopefully good. It drops down when its at idle but when I rev it up the pressure rises approiately. I hope thats ok. Suggestions would also be appreciated there too. Lastly the starting problem. I have found a post on the subject but it still sounds likes a maze. I dont think it is the battery because it was running my fiance's car for the past month and I have just reclaimed it. Thanks for all your guy's help. David

damn dude you described my door exactly. simple, FREE fix. you just need to take out the door locking mechanism at the inside edge of the door and adjust a spring. i posted pics, but bell did a better job with the photos.
NEED HELP big time! door lock.

Unfixed. I am pulling my door apart and I am trying to get to the lock mechanism. How do you do it? I unbolted the window rail but I cant get it out of the way. Do I completely remove it from the car by pushing it upwards? That seems like a pain. The only reason why I ask is because it was unclear in your other post.
In addition the starting system is working perfectly. I cleaned up all the connections including the transmission ground strap. I dont know which one fixed it but I am happy that it is fixed. However my fuel leak also disapeared. Which concerns me. It was just a few drips off of the front of the transmission. As far as I can tell there are no fuel lines going anywhere even close to that position so maybe it wasnt fuel and I was just being crazy. Anyway I am going to continually keep my eye on it. Thanks alot guys. David

you get the rail out by cranking up your window slowly and you push the rail up a bit at a time with the glass. the first few inches to get it started is a beotch because those crazed german engineers installed a thicker block section at the top portion of the rail. so you need to push the rail a tiny bit towards the front of the car with the window rolled all the way down. it will feel un-natural. you need to get this "block" past the door edge. then once the block is out past the door, (it is about a 1.5 inch block section) you can then advance the rail up with the window glass. lift the rail, roll up some window, lift some more rail, so on and so forth. once you peek thru and see that you cleared the door mech STOP! i dont know how hard it is to completely remove the rail and then have to reinstall it. let us not find out! you know that spring in the mechanism. on bell's car, 100% of the spring was on one side of the circlip. i think his is correct, you may want to do the same thing. pm him and have him send you a pic.

A picture is worth 1000 words. I love to see someone illustrate this. Thanks, Alex
