Monday morning blues:
85 Carrera 3.2 Started the car this morning ran perfect, as usual. Pulled to a gas station, turn off car (which I usually don't do). Filled up, went to start the car again and it only cranks. Checked for spark; no spark. Checked for fuel; although I didn't put a guage to it there was pressure in the line. I reconnected the fuel plug, cranked it again, loosened plug again and there was pressure. About a month ago I put a new DME relay and Head temp sensor because the car was hunting when hot at idle. Any other suggestions?

I've been working on it all day. I've bypassed the DME relay and the fuel pump is running. All the fuses are good and I checked most of the grounds, I'm working on that right now. I'm starting to lean towards the reference sensor. Does anyone know how to check these? There is no diagnoses for them in the manual.

I bought the car 6 months ago so I'm not sure how old anything is. The cap and rotor "look" in good shape the coil I can't say. If I were to replace the coil can I replace it with an aftermarket MSD? It looks like a standard coil.

I would go with the standard however, others may chime in on the MSD...

Ok
I've checked for spark at the coil wire; nothing. There's power at the positive side of the coil put I'm getting nothing on the negative side (green wire). Even while cranking. That wire goes straight into the EMC.

Are you close to another Pelicanite (1984 - 1994 porsche) I believe they use the same coil. In fact I pretty sure they do. I would start there before some of the real expensive ignition parts.

Unfortunately I'm not. Since I'm getting no output form the negative wire, wouldn't that rule out the coil? I hooked up a test light to it and I thought I would get some grounding while cranking but I didn't. How else can I test it?

Another thing I'm wondering. Does the Alarm control module control the spark or the fuel? Being that it connects to the DME relay I'm assuming the fuel.

The Alarm is usually conected to the ignition switch! Do you know where your valet switch is? IF you do, hold it (push) for a few seconds then crank on and off the ignition - Then release valet switch. Get in car as normal, close door and start car!
Car should start if it was an alarm issue! BTW- What alarm do you have,Ican give you an phone number to call of someone that can walk you through it

I have an after market however, you would have an alarm switch (in the door) and the ACU which should be in the back of the instrument panel. Are you familiar with how these work?

Bigrubberjeep:
Correct me if I'm wrong: The alarm control unit has two plug connectors. The one on the left has two terminals and the right has eight terminals. I believe there is a test sequence that can be performed but it's beyond my expertise since I am not familiar with factory set up.

I am not that familiar with alarms, let alone factory ones, I just know my "ignition kill" feature was triggered once and by following the above isntructions I bypassed it.

Sorry guys I was working on my car. All the ground points have been taken apart, sanded down and reinstalled. Although I don't have the alarm key, I checked the resistance (5kohms) as per the Bentley manual and it is on the off position. I also checked the other alarm wiring and everything checks out ok. I'm still not sure about the modual itself though.
On the coil, there is actually power to both the positive and negative side of the coil. I think this is correct. So does this tell me its the coil?

Amazing!!! I was just typing up a thread when I read this post. I was going to post a thread regarding the same damn thing. My friend has an 86 911 3.2. He drove to work last week (no problems) got in his car to leave work and nothing.....car tried to crank, yet after checking he had absolutely no spark.
I too am needing feedback. I don't have the car hear so I am hoping in replying to this original thread, I can get the answer to my friend as well. koo |
