Ignition Problem?? - HELP
I have a 77 911S with a 2.7. The car has not been run since last fall when I removed the distributor to adjust the points. I got the car running yesterday but ran into some strange behavior when trying to adjust the timing. A couple of times when moving the distributor very slightly the car would all of a sudden start running terribly and it almost sounded like something was shorting within the distributor cap. Also, the tach would say that the car was turning about 1700RPM when it was probably about 700RPM. Any idea what would cause this? Would incorrectly adjusted points do this?
I ended up removing the distributor and checking the points gap and it was smaller than .028". I readjusted the points but did not have a chance to reinstall the dist. and retry. Also, the following parts are new: cap, rotor, wires, CDI. Thanks for any help you can provide!! -Dave |

Dave,
I don't know about your 'sudden' change phenomenon ... advance weights sticking, maybe. But, bad points or severely maladjusted -- which yours ARE, will cause a crazy tach! Your point gap is supposed to be a nominal 0.014" ... 0.012" - 0.016".
