Wow ! Thanks very much for the offer. It is genuinely appreciated. This is really by far the most helpful and generous internet community I've ever seen. However, as it turns out, I managed to find and solve the problem. And the culprit may surprise a few 964 owners. It turns out the central locking module in my 964 is under the passenger seat as jtkkz said. This is odd since my car is a 1989 and should have the unit under the dash. Odd, but who cares, right? I found the box. And I also found that the door lock relays are plugged into the SIDE of the module. DUH !! So one of the relays had come loose and nearly fallen off (probably from road vibrations). So all I did was bend a few blades inward to make a tighter fit and plug the relay back in and VOILA !! The problem was solved.

That's good news for me but who in the world designed a module with relays plugged in sideways? I'm no engineer but even I can tell that this thing is a malfunction waiting to happen. Obviously this was not one of Stuttgart's finer engineering moments. I wonder how this design got past the technical review committee?

Anyway, to provide a long term solution, I may try wrapping a rubber band or two around the whole thing to keep the relay in place. Makes me wonder, though, how many critical relays and parts are on the verge of falling off my car.

Check out this web site (www.systemsc.com) on the Products page for pictures
of the door lock unit & the alarm unit. The 87a pin of the alarm unit provides the
input to DME relay to allow starting. If the car was jump started with the jumper
battery reversed, the alarm unit will be damaged preventing starting.

I use rubber bands around in the garage to hold boxes closed etc and they weaken and break after a little while. It might be the cold that does it. You might want to find another solution like (quality) masking tape or something.

Holy cow, Laren !! That is a cool website. And yes, Chris, you have a point. Maybe I can use some string? Tape has glue which can dry out. I'm really hoping for a permanent solution. I can't believe I went through so much trouble because of a loose relay. Grrrr...

Janus, I have a 90 c2 doing this same thing. I looked under seat and only found one relay there and lt looks to be fine. You mentioned that you thought it was going to be under the dash? If I can't find the problem I really need to bypass this alarm. holding key in door while starting is getting very frustrating.

Fabricate a short jumper, 3"- 5" long, 14 ga or 16 ga wire ... install male 0.25" Faston tabs at both ends. The jumper goes in the connector at the mating locations for terminals '61' and 'A' on the alarm module ... should be blue wires going to those locations.
Do you substitute the module with the jumper?

urbanassault - I'm sorry to hear you're having the same problem. Since the alarm system in my car does not appear to be located in the "proper" place for my model year, I am guessing it has been modified by a PO. So who knows what has been done to it? It could be a total hack job. However, I'll definitely go out and take some pics with my digicam of the underside of my passenger seat and maybe we can compare notes. Also, if the relay is plugged in snug, then it might be that the electrical contacts are corroded. Might help to try cleaning them with some sand paper. I just had an awful problem with a dim headlight that was resolved once I cleaned the connectors on the plug.

Also, I tried jumping the wires using the info on this thread but had no success at all. Of course, considering my moniker ("Wrench Klutz"), it may be that I did it wrong.

Keep us posted. I'll do whatever I can to be helpful. And there are folks on this BBS who know huge amounts. Since we had the same temporary solution (i.e. holding the spare key in the door), I suspect we may have had similar causes. I'm sure we can figure this problem out.

BTW - Any pics of your car?

Weee! minutes after last post, I got it working! Corrosion on relay contacts. 2 relays located internally in the alarm module. I carefully pryed black cover off and saw black crispy substance on one of the relay contacts, gently scraped with razor blade, works great! Nothing like the feeling when I opened that door and the alarm stayed off!

How about a zip tie?

Woo Hoo !! Congrats !! And your car is damned sweet. I think black looks good on the 964 body type - much better than red (NOTE: my car is red). I'll have to open up the module in my car just to check those relays and maybe take some pics. The zip tie idea has promise.

SoCal911SC beat me to it - I second the zip tie idea - doubt that anything will make one of them come loose
