Question What is it?

On my 79SC in the engine compartment on the right side above and behind the oil tank is a canister. Mine has two hoses going in the aft side and a open hole in the front side, considering the aft side of the canister is toward the front of the car? What is it? Is a hose missing or is it supposed to be open?

It's something related to the smog pump, and the way you described it is the way it's supposed to be so you're all good.

Is it a charcoal filter? If the air pump is gone, is it doing anything?

IT is a charcoal cannister. And even if the airpump is gone, it is still doing its job.
