Jim, John....John, Jim....!!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!
Well, obviously, I was able to repair the threads. YES!!!!! Took my time and worked the rethreading tap up into the hole...slowly but surely...pulled it out completely several times, cleaned out the hole, blew it out with compresed air, oiled up the tap and back in she went, over and over until I got the threads cleaned up...all the way up to the end. Finally, tried the bolt and in it went. Removed the bolt before tightening it down to install the support assembly. Held the assembly in the right spot and put in all the nuts and bolts, just finger tight, then slowly worked them in until they were all TIGHT!!! Split washers in place on the tranny mount bolts gave me just enough room to tighten them to torque and there she sits. Just have to connect and reinstall the things I took off the engine to do the drop and she should be ready to go. Thanks again, both of you, for all your help! Randy |
I've said it before, but what with the surreally beautiful photographs, the terse prose of John and Jim, and Randy's optimism and ability, this thread is one of the most exhilarating Porsche experiences I've had--away from the track.
|
Here she sits....tightened down and ready to roll.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085591645.jpg Just wanted to doublecheck this installation. Got the big black cable coming from the battery and the red wire here in this pic connected to the same spot, and the yellow wire connected to the other clip on terminal...I believe this is right...hard to tell from the pic I took at the begining of this thread. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085591812.jpg Randy |
That's correct. Jim
|
Well, I am really close now. Spent the evening connecting everything back up. Double-checked, walked away for a while, came back and triple-checked. It looks as though I got everything.
Even went as far as walking through the steps spelled out in Wayne's Engine Removal Technical Article (The one I used to drop the engine) and checked things off as I read them...knowing that each piece, hose, clamp, or plug has been re-connected. Right now, I just put a bunch of oil in the engine. She took 9 quarts and the indicator shows about 1/2 inch short of the second mark. Is 9 quarts enough? I seem to recall reading that it should hold more than that. While pulling it out, I removed or disconnected ALL of the oil lines in the rear end...and that's it. Between the engine oil and the transmission fluid, I managed to fit it all into a 3.5 gallon bucket. Seems to add up right...1 gal of tranny fluid and 2.25 gals of oil. Is 9 quarts right at this point? Randy P.S. If all goes well, I just need to connect the battery, slap the rear tires back on, lower her off the jackstands and fire her up. WOW!!!!! I could be driving her this weekend! Think I'm getting excited????? :D :D :D :D :D |
I assume you changed out the oil filter so it's probably empty and will fill as soon as the oil pump runs. Nine will likely be okay but I'd go ahead and add a 10th quart, then top off later as required when the engine is warm. Have someone watching the engine for leaks (gasoline and oil) when you start and have a fire extinguisher out and ready. Make sure your oil pressure is correct (rag left in oil line?). Don't forget things like torquing the rear wheel lug nuts, CV joints, adjusting shift coupler and clutch, removing the front wheel chocks and clearing all tools, debris, rags and old parts from the engine bay. Cheers, Jim
|
Yes, Jim, the oil filter was changed and upon your advice, the 10th quart has been added. I thought that might be the case.
Using your post as a reference, the following have been accomplished: Fire Extinguisher - In the garage Oil Lines - Cleared CV Joints - Torqued Lug Nuts - Will be torqued upon installation Shift Coupler - Adjusted according to an article posted here on Pelican Clutch - Will test during first drive All Tools, Rags, Debris, Etc... - Cleared and accounted for. While in the Marines, we made it a requirement to do an ATAF (All Tools Accounted For) at the end of each job, end of each shift, etc. This habit served us well then and continues to serve me well even now. Keeping it clean and knowing where everything is...when you need it, saves so much down time and also lets you keep your mind on the task at hand....helps you to not forget things by being distracted. :D Well, calling it quits for the night. Hopefully, I'll be posting back here again tomorrw night with a pic of me motoring down the street. Kinda feel like a kid on Christmas Eve...:D :D :D Randy |
She is all back together and working like a champ!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED ME TO ACCOMPLISH THIS JOB! :D :D :D :D :D John Walker, Jim Sims, UTKarmann_Ghia (Matt, you Devil Dog!), Ischmitz, Grady Clay, and everyone else who joined in to make this one heckuva learning experience for me. Also, can't forget Jay Houghton, Josh Roberts and Dan Wooley, another neighborhood Pelican who were also very instrumental in the success of this evolution. I couldn't have done this without each and every one of you. I am definitely in your debt! After spending the evening last night connecting everything up, I was left with just installing the tires, connecting the battery and the speedo cable today. Well, the battery and tires went without issue, and I still haven't spliced the speedo wires together yet. I'll get to that this weekend. Once everything was set, I hopped in and turned the key...my wife standing faithfully nearby, fire extinguisher in hand, and...all I could hear was the fuel pump...she wouldn't turn over....hmmmmm? Back up in the air, I gave a call to Dan Wooley and when he showed up, we took a look. There were a few spades on the starter where we could hook the smallest of the three wires. One was like a dual spade, the other was a single. Moved the wire from the dual to the signal and tried it again....and she sprang to life..as if she had been waiting patiently for this opportunity. Took another look at everything while she ran for a while and it all looked good...sounded good...so around the neighborhood we went.....and she shifted like a dream. Nice and tight, no binding or anything...just in and out of gear, whichever gear was selected....it was so awesome! I have my car back!!!!!! I can't say "Thank You!" enough, but "THANK YOU!:D :D :D :D :D " Oh yeah, don't want to forget Wayne, who, if it wasn't for his website, I would be so stuck! Thanks, Wayne! If any of you guys are in the area, please stop by, or give a yell, or whatever....at least let me shake your hand!!! Randy |
CONGRATS!!! I feel like I just sat through a graduation ceremony. Glad to hear it all went together well and I hope to be joining your ranks within the next week.

Beethoven, I'll be getting some pics this weekend, when its light outside. I'll have my wife snap one of me rolling down the street, and I'll try not to glare the photo too much with this huge smile I'm wearing! :D :D :D :D :D You know, I've been meaning to mention this for a while, so I'll do it now. When this thread first started, John Walker was the first to reply. And with only the little bit of information I was able to provide at the time, he immediately made the exact diagnosis as to what my problem was. (Man, that sounds so cool...WAS! :D ) Anyway, what a true master of his craft. I can't say enough about what a great guy John is. For that matter, so is everyone else who contributed. Thanks again! Randy |
Yeah, John rocks. Only reason I consider moving to Seattle...
|
Congrats! I am printing this thread for when I do this later this summer. Keep your computer on ;-}
|
SHHHHHHHHH!!!!! She's sleeping! Taking a rest after having major surgery performed on her. ;)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085744772.jpg It is so nice to not have her sitting on jack stands again! Randy edit: Speed Buggy, I thought I would add this list of valuable resources that you'll probably want to use when you do your tranny this summer... http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_engine_drop/911_engine_drop-1.htm http://www.pelicanparts.com/motorcity/marcesq3/trannyrebuild.htm http://www.fasterfasterfaster.com/Tranny.html john walker's workshop UTKarmann_Ghia ischmitz Jim Sims Grady Clay |
Thank you. I have found some parts lists in your and other threads, but I am having a hard time duplicating some of the parts on Pelican, such as brake bands. Are these called something else here? Congrats again. You and CD and the others have convinced me and the wife and kids to do this ourselves.
|
Yeah, I had some difficulties from time to time, keeping the nomenclature straight. It can get confusing.
If I have it right, the Brake Band can also be called the Energizer Band. Do you have a FAX number? You can PM it to me and I can send you copies of what Grady Clay sent me. They may be a bit difficult to read since it will be a FAX copy of a FAX, but I'm sure it will help. Lemme know! Randy |
Ingo!!!!
I couldn't have said it better myself! Thanks Loads, buddy!!!!! Randy |
Randy - you have a PM
Cheers, Mike |
Mike,
E-mail me your fax and e-mail address and I'll send you some readable info. Best, Grady gradyclay@hotmail.com |
Thanks, Grady!
I just PM'ed Mike that I would be faxing the stuff you sent me when I get home from work. But that won't be for another 2 hours or so. It would also be a FAXed copy of a FAX, so possibly not very legible. Yous most likely would be best. Also, thanks loads for all the help and advice you've given. If you're ever in the Atlanta area, be sure to look me up! Randy |
Randy,
Yes, we may come visit my cousin near Covington, GA this summer. He is the 5th generation owner of our family farm and has just added a horse barn operation. That is something my son (18 - the SCCA racer and PCA member) wants to get involved with during college. According to Mapquest, it looks like you are a little more than an hour away. It would be fun to visit the 915 and swap 911 stories with you. Best, Grady |
Look forward to seeing you, Grady!
Randy |
Well, I've been to the local Home Depot a few times today and have logged around 25 miles or so. I know that doesn't compare to a cruise through the North Georgia Mountains, it IS a start.
Shifting is a bit "tight" but I guess that's to be expected. It feels really good. It's great to be driving her again. Figured I'd post a few pics for anyone interested... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085856422.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085856434.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085856453.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085856467.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085856484.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085856505.jpg Thanks again to everyone who helped and encouraged me through this project. Hope I can return the favor someday! Randy |
And a few more...

Randy |
You da man!
Woohoo! It's A-L-I-V-E! Nice brother, good to see you're back in the saddle again. What an experience, huh? After a week or 2, she'll slide into gears again with no tightness at all. The amazing thing is that now you'll be able to downshift into 1st and 2nd gears at appropriate speeds. I never thought I'd say this, but once the tranny was rebuilt, she's now a PLEASURE to drive! I'm still not sure how often a rebuild is required, but I'll be on the lookout for the signs that the snycros are getting worn (grinding, etc). Be good, and, well, drive the snot outta her! :D
SmileWavy |
She sure is a lot more fun to drive. No worries about "missing" a shift or anything like that.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement, Matt! This has surely been one he!!uva learning experience. Hopefully, I'll be able to share the knowledge I've gained here with someone else. Semper fi, Leatherneck! Randy |
I will be glad to help you share that knowledge, either later this year or early next year. Maybe when the new trans rebuild book comes out.
Glad you are back in it. Mike |
Mike,
Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you those parts drawings. Let the sharing begin!!!! :) Randy |
Congrats! I'm guessing you can now 'shift into first'!! :)
|
...and second, and third, and fourth, and fifth....even Reverse. It's a beautiful thing! :D :D :D
|
Nice work Randy, I have an 85 Targa and may be taking on the same deal. I am in Newnan, so if you need any assistance (IE porsche wrenching, I would be glad to help. Everything is a learning experience.
|
Randy...congrats on a job well done......great looking car with a beautiful engine compartment. Kudos!
|
Randy,
Randy, I just read your thread, this is incredible! From a former Hospital Corpsman ('82-'91, 1st Med Bn, 3rd Med Bn) to a Marine, I say "way to go Devil Dog"!!!! Congratulations! Your well-documented project will help many people and give others the confidence to do their own repairs. You did a great job! Aren't these "Pelicans" great?!! |
Yama, as soon as I come up with another project, I just may take you up on that offer. (Not that I'm hoping for anything else to break any time soon  )
Mwbaum, thanks for the comments. Art, Semper fi, brother. If what I documented here helps anybody else in any way, I'll feel honored. But, honestly, the Pelicans that provided the assistance deserve all the credit. They really did make this a pretty easy task. Yes, indeed, Pelicans rock!!! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/gitaar.gifhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/gitaar.gifhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/drummer.gifhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/dazzler1.gifhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/gitaar.gifhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/gitaar.gif Randy |
Ok, so months after the complete rebuild, how's the tranny shifting? Mine took a couple weeks or so to loosen up, but then it shifted like butter :)
|
Hey, Matt!
Thanks for asking! Well, it's been 2000 miles now and the tranny is still working like a dream. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to improve on things, but I plan to change out all the bushings in the shifter pretty soon, just because...! Yes, sir...after a couple of weeks, it "loosened" up a bit, but I'm glad it hasn't loosened too much. It is always so much fun to drive now. Sorry for not responding right away. I was out in Washington visiting with the wife's family all last week. While I was there, I took the opportunity to swing by John Walker's Workshop and was lucky enough to catch him there. What a super guy! He spent the better part of an hour or so just talking with my father-in-law and me about cars. And strangely enough, most of the talk was NOT of Porsches. It seems JW not only knows P-Cars, but he's equally an expert on older classics. (Does his knowledge know no bounds???) Anyway, if even a small fraction of his knowledge was transferred to me through our handshake, I'll have increased my knowledge 100 times over. If I ever get out your way, Matt, I'll be sure to stop by and look you up. You were a lot of help! Thanks, Randy |
Wow Randy, I just spent the last 2.5 hours reading this thread on the advise of Dan. Thanks for posting all the pics, you are an inspiration for me as I will be soon rebuilding my tranny. Well, I'd better go to bed now, I'll be looking forward to asking you some questions in the future, thanks.
|
Randy,
Your ladder is giving me the willies. Consider clamping or hooking it to the wall near the top before it undoes your hard work. BTW great job and thread. |
