Question What exhaust is best ?

I have a 911 from 86 and my exhaust needs to be replaced soon.
I would like to change it with a dual pipe exhaust , meaning 1 left and 1 right.
Has somebody any idea of what type to choose ? Does it exist ?
Most pipes are facing the rear , not realy left and right as I would like.
I would appreciate all idea's ! (and maybe pics ?)

Here's an option:

RickM or Wil Ferch...need assistance (dual exhaust mod)

Also, the Dansk single-in / dual out is a popular choice. As suggested do search as opinions vary.

How much have you budgeted for your new muffler?

Also, have you had your Catalitic converter checked? Sometimes you don't realize it has to be replaced also till you remove your muffler, then your in for another $250

As he lives in Belgium I suspect he has no catalytic converter and instead has the desireable premuffler. I would go with the Dansk 1 in 2 out muffler.

Opps, I didnt see his location -

Just FYI - I went with a custom made Magnaflow - Single in and single out with a double wall oval tip. I like the sound, (low throaty sound that screams at high RPM over 5,100) But if you want something pre-made I would go with Dansk as well, just expect to pay a few $$$ more

Thanks !
after reading a lot of earlier postings , Im quite sure to go for the Dansk solution , just a little bit troubled with the noise it's making. We don't need this converter here, but we have a lot of troubles with sound at the annual checkups. This weekend we have a big meeting on the racetrack of Francorchamps, I'm sure I will find someone with a Dansk there !

Is there a way you could come up with some sort of tailpipe piece that will reduce noise for the inspection that can be taken out later? For example, if you had a dual out, you could block off one of the outlets and it would be quiter to some degree. Maybe there's a good looking (good enough to pass the test) piece you can insert into a single outlet to quiet it down during the test.

We don't have sound test in the USA....but we should. Of course I would probably fail but I would gladly give up my Dansk dual out if it meant all the loud Harleys were off the street. As a cyclist I have grown to despise loud bikes. Some like to blip the throttle as they roll by a cyclist. If they time it right it's freaking loud.

I had a B & B now I have a Dansk, the Dansk is less noisier then the B & B. Both were single in dual out.

Some US inspections will flag a car that's obviously very loud. In fact I've been told that any modification done to a factory exhaust is potentially illegal.

Caps are used for some multi-tip exhausts but again, depending on locality, you could get flagged because it is temporary.

Harleys have loud exhausts for safety reasons, and I support that even though I do not currently ride.

Hey Crisp ,

thanks for the inventive idea , but this would not work with our inspectors ! In Belgium we can not do anything with a car , no modification allowed at all , this year they introduced a new law for the tyres : have to be the same size as the original ! As I have 255 on the back , this will be a problem also. I agree that these inspections can be necessary , but here it's becoming a joke ! But at the other hand we have different speed limits ,I think ! Drive 50 miles and we can go as fast as we can ! (Germany). So , I'm not complaining !

Thumbs down

Needs replacement - Why ?

simple :

I've parked the car backwards and did not see a big rock.
Result : I got stuck on my muffler and there is now a big hole where it should not be !

So you just need a muffler? Not a whole exhaust including headers.

The Dansk do sound good and not too loud. If noise is a real issue, single out is best

Welcome to the board.

I can only agree with people who recommend a Dansk. I've heard the 1 in 2 out and it had a very nice deep sound not too loud, but not too silent either. I like it.

If you're afraid of problems at the inspection perhaps the 1 in 1 out will be a good option?

Hey Guy911 welkom to de bord I'm also constantly reading all the stuff on this site and wisecracking my way up the number charts, for lack of better advice (usually).

Dansk certainly seems to be the way to go (in the USA) and Mikkel in DK is also in favor, so I also searched for Dansk stuff over here and, well, in Belgium I haven't the slightest clue as to where to get their stuff... And a complete exhaust system by courier from the US, well, have to save up some money first...you know these things are taxed heavily on importing them. Ask me how I know...

I'll be going over to Spa this weekend, too, but my buddy who was driving on friday is not showing up, so I might choose to go saturday or sunday (good weather forecast, friday might be rainy). You might want to ask for "Belgik" at the Club911 pits, I think they got no. 26 at the F1 garages, they're a Français-French group and some of them surely have loud and not so loud exhausts, might be interesting to ask them... Salut!
