Alternator install F up

Installed a new high output alternator without any problems...or so I thought.

Today I rechecked my work just to be sure and discovered that I had not pushed my fan housing in all the way at the bottom which meant that the crank pulley was rubbing on it...in fact it took of some metal (off the fan housing). This would explain the tightness of the belt even though all six shims were inside. That little voice kept saying "there is something wrong with that..."

This is now corrected as well as the belt tightness (four inside, two outside...totally perfect) but I am concerned that I did damage to the new alternator and the crank. The belt looks okay but I may change that to be sure. Ran the car this way for about 40 miles or so.

Expert opinions?

You're probably OK if the metal that was taken off the fan housing is not in the immediate area where the belt normally rides. Even if it did, if the removal was slight, I would think that an alternate number of shims would bring you back to "goodness". More important is whether the rectangle ( with curved ends) on the pulley...where it contacts the fan...is still the same shape or was it "hogged-out".

Will:

Metal was taken off the bottom the fan housing were the Z mark is. It was about 1mm of material. The top of the housing was in flush but the bottom was not pushed in all the way so it was touching the rear edge of the crank pulley.

The alternator rotates freely without any grinding noises...

I think the tightness was due to the fact that the belt was at an angle rather than straight up and down. It is all fixed now and I have moved two shims to the outside.

I am concerned whether you think there is any damage to the crank by having the fan housing sitting (though not 100% of it's weight) on it for 40 miles.

Did the same thing last time I r/r'd the fan-I'm okay after around 500mi, but that may not be enough to know. Will make it hard to find the TDC mark next time, if you're crank pulley looks like mine.
